A9 - overheating?

Hi folks,

I received my A9 yesterday and spent an hour in the park this morning with it (comparing its performance to my Olympus E-M1 Mark II).

I have to say that I love the way the A9 handles. And my review of the pics on the LCD suggests great IQ (I was using the new Sony 85 f/1.8 and the Sigma 50-100).

But one unnerving thing was that the high temp warning came on. I was admittedly in the sun most of the time but it's only around 65 degrees today in NJ. I did have the camera on and shooting probably for 40-45 minutes nonstop. (No video, by the way.)

I set the sleep timer to 10 seconds and that seemed to help. But this worries me a bit for summer/warm weather shooting.

Anyone else see any overheating?

Thanks,

Will

it sucks to hear this. my suggestion, spend the $350 and get the grip, it will eliminate the issue. after putting grips on both A7s and A6500, no more over heating issues

Yeah, I think I will -- for other reasons too. I sort of "grew up" with the Canon 1D3 and then 1D4, so I'm sure I'd feel fine bulking up the Sony a bit. :)

It's a pretty sweet camera and definitely a keeper for me!

Stacking another silicon die over the sensor only makes the thermal problem more challenging. Unless they change to a smaller pitch process which I doubt it.

Can you please explain why a grip would help? Thanks.

Any feedback on the AF performance compared to the E-M1 II? Seems like the A9 should be working on a completely different level than the Olympus if reviews are claiming it's comparable to the 1DX2/D5.

AF of A9 is really really good. Check this video, for example:

Let's keep this thread focused on overheating please. There are plenty of other threads about AF and not enough info on overheating yet.

I think the grip helps because you're keeping the battery, which can get hot, out of the body. The dummy battery that feeds power to the camera from the grip presumably doesn't get hot.

Anyway, that's what I've read...
this is exactly right. once i put grips on my A7r2s, no more over heating. it's a damn shame Sony can't put out a body which doesn't over heat.

Thanks William. Another good reason to use the grip. The battery power holder grip will also permit using the peak design clutch when using the TechArt Pro (TAP) AF adapter. Without the grip the peak design clutch plate interferes with the TAP.

K-H.

Interesting. I've been fearful of overheating, ever since the day my A7SII was knocked out of action in 95 degree heat. Luckily my A7RII stayed alive despite the overheat warning.

Looks like I'll be investing in 2 new grips.

Also the new NPFZ100 battery has twice the capacity - 7.2V / 16.4Wh (2280mAh) - over the NP-FW50 battey yet is only slightly bigger.

This too could be a source of additional thermal load.

Did the camera actually shutdown or just the overheating warning came on?

Not saying that getting the warning is a non-issue but the too get conflated with the internet hype and I'm trying to get a better idea from someone who's actually experienced the problem.

A grip always helps in similar situation because battery is one major culprit for overheating and the grip inserts a dummy battery instead, while actual the battery used is in the grip (away enough).

The a6000 for example is known for overheating in video but as shown in this test the grip eliminates it

I turned my A9 on and shot for 15 minutes and got the high temperature warning. I continued to shoot and ignored it. It shut down shortly after and had to wait 5-10 minutes before I could shoot again. I'm actually shooting this second with a client and had to pull out my FUJI XPRO2 and finish the shoot. This is so ridiculous.

Sony can't compete with the 1DXm2 if their flagship can't handle a little sunshine. Sports are often played in warm weather. This may be a disaster for them if they don't address it soon.
