A Z9 message from B&H

Matt Irwin, Seth, and Ricci did a Zoom meeting last night and Ricci was quoted as saying; "Don't believe anything you read on the internet when it comes to delivery dates". He inferred the October 2022 date is rubbish. He went on to say Nikon is producing 3,500 units per month and will ship them.

These stores all indicated around 10 months' delay. And they are the top three chain stores selling cameras in Japan. How can they lie?
As Thom Hogan recently mused there are many variables. Right now the USD is appreciating against the Yen so Nikon makes more money for every Z9 they sell in the USA vs. Japan and it appears Nikon bean counters are taking advantage of this by shipping more units to the USA vs. domestic suppliers.

I think something getting lost here is the a difference between when preorders will come versus new orders. No, the preorders are very likely not going to be delayed until October. Yes, if you place an order today you are in for a long wait because there's a line ahead of you.

Canon's also saying 6 months for the R3

If Nikon can manufacture 3500 Z9 cameras per month and there were 40,000 pre-orders as was previously reported then that would take about 11 1/2 months to fill all the pre-orders.

Some unknown factors are

1) how many pre-orders will translate into sales and not duplicates or triplicates?

2) when did Nikon actually start manufacturing the production version?

3) Will Nikon find a way to increase monthly volume?

Either way, seems reasonable that a camera store would inform anyone ordering now that they likely will not get one until October 2022 based on current estimates.

I do think it would be nice if Nikon put out some kind of statement on when they started manufacturing and reassured their customers that they were on track with their monthly volumes.
Fortunately my other cameras all still work so I’ll be fine until I get my Z9.

The question isn't "how", it's "why".

Is it really a lie? It may not be the factual truth, but that doesn't make it a lie. They're just throwing a date out there. Maybe they want people to stop calling in asking where their camera is. Who knows? More importantly, what does it matter?

It would be nice, but perhaps not so smart. Supply of parts is a big unknown. They could be on track and then they don't get any more parts. Then they have to put out another statement.

People will get their order when they get their order.

I thought I could grab one, as usual, from any camera store around me who has them. I was wrong this time. All theses three use point system, which gives you back around 10% as points. Now I am holding a special coupon with an extra 3%. So what a pity, today is the last day...
You thought you were going to walk in and buy a Z9? That's too funny.

That is not lying, that is a normal procudere when one does not know when they will get the item. It has nothing to do with the real shipping date.
They didn't say when my Apple Mac Pro 14 would be available. Instead they suggested Apple store for me, because only Apple knows the exact date.

Most likely. I believe it was Dec. 24 when Z9 started to be available in Japan. Not sure all the preorders before that date went through, unlikely.

Why not? Obviously you never live here. Even for preorders, I have to walk in.

Hardly to believe any buyer here in Tokyo would place an order online without trying it, just after reading feedbacks from online reviews or forum discussions. Because these stores are so close to where you live. It only takes me half an hour or less to to be there, including the showrooms. The way of shopping is totally different.

Good luck to you, hopefully based on what others are saying it won't be actually that long before a person can just pick one up off the shelf.

However, it looks a lot of DSLR holdouts have finally converted, and come over to the mirrorless side. The $5500 USD price tag did not help. I was not thinking of pre-ordering until I saw the price.

Reverse sticker shock, if you will.

There are dozens of big camera stores packed in a tiny city here. The flagship store of Biccamera and Yamadadenki are just meters apart, across the street. Such competition doesn't allow any type of mistake, particularly online information. I would't call the months' delay as "rubbish" as others. Unless some preorders are cancelled, I would expect couple of months' waiting, which is absolutely ok for me, may not be the same with others.

I think store will feel be honored, in stead of be bothered, if anyone called and tried to order anything.

Thank you! I am enjoying shopping around theses days during Happy New Year sale. Really didn't pay too much attention to the camera until now. I tried it couple of times in Nikon showroom and stores. It's a solid camera, bit heavy though. I use Nikon mainly for landscape, so I am thinking . ..

Wish all the best, and Happy New Year!

It is one store in Japan. Their date has probably nothing at all to do with when you get your camera.
Just to be clear, it's different stores in Japan, and they are very large camera retailers:

at least these:
Bic Camera
Yodobashi
Yamada Denki
Shouldn't be that surprising. D850 was also out of stock for a year+, and that was not during a global pandemic with massive supply chain shortages. If Z9 even approaches D850 levels of popularity it's going to be slow going for a long while.

It took me couple of months to pick up a D850 back in 2018. So I wouldn't feel surprised if I have to wait another couple of months, when all Apple new ipads, iphones, macbooks etc. can hardly be found in stock. Besides, I doubt there will be the same mass production of Z9 as D850. So for whoever needs a Z9, better hurry up and preorder.

Exactly. There are lot of people on D4, D5, D6, D8xx pro bodies who were waiting to make the switch to the Z mount utnil the Pro Z bodies were out. Well the Z9 is the first one and specs wise for a great many of the hold outs it can replace both a D850 and a D6 and for a large number of them even a second cam for video. More than ever before those on the D8xx platform are going the cross shop the integrated grip flagship body due to the Z9's specs, shockingly low price and there being not even a whisper about a Z8 yet. A flagship body has never had the demand the Z9 does and will. A date of October 2022 to actually get one if you order now seems about right to me.

I just got an email from B&H:

Hello,

Unfortunately we don't have an expected delivery date at this time for the NIKON Z9 MIRRORLESS CAMERA (BODY ONLY) as it is currently backordered by the manufacturer.

As soon as we receive it in stock we will promptly ship it to you. Once the order has been shipped we will notify you via e-mail.

We apologize for the delay to your order and any inconvenience it has caused you.

Please let us know if you require any further assistance.

Thank you, we appreciate your business
.
Typical automated message which B&H sends when an item is backordered. You'll get the same message again after some time and again and again ... until your order ships.

Sucks, but it is what it is. Unfortunately there’s a notion in the blogosphere that the delay will be until October of 2022.

You can't infer anything from this message, except that the camera has not been readied for shipping yet. It could be sent to you in a week or in a year and you'll get the same automated message.
The typical backordered message doesn’t come from a person. I’ve shopped with B&H for years and have received their automated backorder messages for several items including the Z9. This is not an automated response:

We did not forget about you!

You are receiving this message because you asked to be notified when the
Nikon Z 9 Mirrorless Camera (B&H # NIZ9) becomes available. We advised you then that we would send you interim updates. We regret the item remains unavailable.

We will continue to update you on the status of this item via email every 2 weeks until it becomes available to you.

  • If you do not wish to receive interim status updates, please click here (you will still receive notification when the item is in stock or available for Pre-order up to six months from date of unsubscribing)
  • If you wish to remove yourself from the notification list for this item entirely, please click here (you will no longer receive ANY future notifications about this item)
Typical message from B&H.

Every two weeks they will send another email letting you know it's not in stock :(

Been getting these for a while when wanting a few lenses. this one is slightly different as its a pre order message, otherwise the same.

No way to know when an item Will be in.

Patience ..best for those who ordered to use what they now have...and when it comes...then it's Christmas, your Birthday and that day becomes a new Holiday

:)
