I've been a technician at a G.M. dealer for 23yrs. Some of the vehicles now are way over 50k, and they have "recalls" all the time. I listen to some of you bitching about "your being inconvenienced" by Sony, for a problem "they knew" was there! ( I paid bla, bla, money etc.) Ya know, short of 1, and I mean 1, recall G.M. has had in 23yrs. They have NEVER (the same goes for almost all other auto manufactureres) EVER, picked up your car/truck, fixed it, and returned it to your home! Does ANYONE know ANY buisiness that has done that on a mass scale? My God, the unsold 717's still on the shelf didn't even have time to get dusty, and Sony is already repairing them! I say GREAT JOB SONY!!!!!!! for rectifying a problem in a VERY timely fashion and going WAY OVER the extra mile to accomidate your customers! I havn't lost one ounce of faith in Sony!

As far as you FEW whiners out there that have been SO PUT OUT over this, GROW UP!!!!!!! Maybe just for you few, Sony should shut their doors in dishonor and shame, give you ALL there stocks, and buy you a NIKON!!
After all-------- YOU HAD A BAD DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

everybody else-------------I LOVE YOU ALL! :)

Mike,

The fact that you worked for GM or any car dealership discounts any opinion you may have on any subject that relates to service or quality!

Last time I checked American car makers have had their A$$'s kicked by overseas competetion. Oh yea, that's right - you guys decided you better form a union so that you can CRY everytime someone tells you to do a better job or actually pay you for the quality work you do. Not to mention "freak out" when someone claims they can do the same job with cheaper labor.

I do applaud Sony for admitting a problem but honor at ones own company is a Japanese thing. If there would have been an issue like this at GM, 98 people would have had to die before GM, or any other US car maker would have pointed the finger at someone else? Take a look at Ford as a recent example - give me a break!

Keep this in mind as well Mike, one of the reason those cars cost over 50K is mainly due to the inflated salaries that your unions have created. Makes me sick that one must pay 22K for a basic truck that "MIGHT" make it 65K miles.

Sorry, you hit a nerve here!

John Gaddy,

Actually John, the 2002 Chevrolet Malibu was just recently rated first in initial quality by JD Power and Associates for mid-size vehicles....that puts the American built car ahead of such cars as the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima......not too bad for car makers getting the "A$$es" kicked .....right?

Mike's message wasn't so much about the quality of the 717 anyway...it was about the "spoiled brat" reaction that so many people seem to have with parting with their "blankies" for a week or so!

Mike,

How you're doing? As one of the "whiners" you compain about I felt obligated to reply. First let me say I think the 717 is a great camera and I can't wait to get mine back. I think that they are doing the recall well but that's what I would expect them to do.

My life is not upset by the recall and I don't see it as major event in any one's life. That said I think SONY goofed. I don't see how they with all their resources missed a glich that a few hardy folks on STF detected. They might be doing a great job with the recall (I'll withhold my complete endorsement until I get my camera back) but they didn't do a great job testing it prior to its release.

That said, when the dust settles we will have the best camera in its class (IMHO) and we will go out and take some good pics which in the end that's what's its all about. Enjoy.

Mike V. Harry, I have a 707 and sympathize with you all, and hopefully I didn't mistakenly offend you 99% of folks who understand, YES, they goofed, but they are taking care of it as best they can. It's the 1% that act as if the Earth just fell off it's axis and are acting somewhat rediculous about the whole thing. It's just life-------live it!

Mike,

No offense taken. Can't wait for this to be over so we can concentrate on the pictures. Have a good one.

That Malibu is a fine vehicle....and would explain their massive numbers on the streets today....

Also, look back at how high JD Powers rated the the Ford Explorers.....These guys are as good at reporting as movie critics...

Spoiled brats.......I worked, I earned money, I bought a 1K camera and 2 weeks out of the box I confirm it is broken and I should just say "Gee, I am really lucky" or "Gee, I really feel I made the best overall decision".

Why can I not get a boss as passive as the people that make posts that say "Calm down, Sony is doing the best they can and are looking out for you. These things happen and we need to except them".

The door swings both ways: You get tired of hearing people that have grounds to complain and I get tired of people defending the root cause of the complaints. One of us has to stop first and it will not be me when seeing threads like this....

Hope you enjoy the Malibu! :)

Agreed! It seems Mike's argument is that we'd all be thrilled with Sony's problems if we just owned a piece of GM's shoddily-engineered junk. Surely the day will never come when we look to GM for quality standards!

I remember that when the Lumina was introduced it had a record average of 30-something defects per car.

My brother bought a new Camaro in '89, with an extended GM bumper-to-bumper warranty. Three times within the first year (and 10,000 miles) the engine caught fire as he was driving through the desert. Each time GM actually tried to not warranty the problem. Turned out to be a clutch line to near the engine that would heat up, rupture and start a fire. GM eventually recalled it for a heat-shield fix.

My grandfather bought one of the first aluminum block Cadillacs in the 1980's. The block cracked at 60,000 miles and GM would not do a thing about it.

My aunt owned a new 199X Grand Am that would occasionally simply not start (not crank...nothing). Took it to the dealership several times in the two years she owned it. Never was fixed. Sold it at a huge loss because she was honest about the problem with the next purchaser.

And how about those 1980's Malibus that exploded in fire in moderate rear-end collisions. I knew a couple of little girls that lost their lives to that monument to GM ingenuity.

I know this is off the forum's topic, but get serious. I felt it my duty when I finished graduate school to buy American, so I bought a Dodge Intrepid. That car still runs, but almost every non-essential system in the car is down. Never again. And never, never GM!

it's axis
Mike, you could be right about the numbers, but if so wouldn't it be a more peaceable solution to let those extreme characters just fade away rather than risk firing up a debate on something that's now becoming almost OT?

As a rider, of sorts, I do feel that some people who've shown a degree of exasperation over this issue, after the parade of problems and non-information from Sony over almost a year that it took the 707 to settle down, may be more entitled to it than some others would allow. I'll readily admit to being more sensitive to this from behind a very ragged Australian dollar, but let's not forget that even in the U.S., cameras of the F7x7's class cost (just as they do here) almost an order of magnitude more than some excellent, full featured film SLRs still being marketed. We're not all made of money, and I for one don't feel too inclined to just say "there, there... try again" to Sony over the embarrassing history of faults that continues with this series. The recently reported mailout to US users of 717s is commendable, but represents nothing more than a demonstration of how it should always work. I'm afraid you'll only hear me clapping with one hand until Sony manufacture gets its act together in terms of prompt and equal communication, to ALL its marketing, distributing and service agencies world wide, of every operational and service issue that arises. We're in the Information Age, after all. The disparities that we read about across various parts of Sony's global market are utterly inexcusable.

First let me list all the companies that have made a flawless product everytime on the very first try.

1.

Ok, now that's done, let me repeat what I said once before.

I try to judge companies not by the fact they creat a product may have a problem, but what they do when they learn they have created a product that has a problem.

You can take it from there and judge whether you think Sony handled this problem well or judge them on their inability to create a perfect product each time. Your call.
