For those who don't want to hear another word about the 5D Mark II, I release you from the obligation of finishing this thread.

But for the rest of us... there appears to be a Field Guide announced on Amazon.

Title: Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital Field Guide (Paperback)
ISBN-10: 0470409509
ISBN-13: 978-0470409503
Author: Charlotte K. Lowrie
ETA: November 10, 2008
304 pages -

Here is the link:
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Mark-Digital-Field-Guide/dp/0470409509/
(Is there any chance this is a mistake or hoax?)

I have been very happy using my 10D for years now and I feel it's FINALLY time to upgrade. In fact, I'll be taking the plunge as soon as the 5D Mark II is released. I have up to $4k available on my credit card burining a hole in my pocket waiting for this thing.... lol Seriously though. I have been very happy with my 10D and I have been "Out taking pictures" every day (I have SEVERAL Gigabytes of images to prove it), but when I get home at night I eagerly look for any hint of the 5D's replacement....Finally!

If this is true, do you think there a chance that the author or publisher would get in trouble for releasing information early?

(I saved the webpage locally in case it's removed for some reason)

Comments welcome.

From the book description:

"This portable guide will be perfect for professional photographers to take with them anywhere to reference at any time. It’ll help readers better understand this complicated camera and show them how to get the exact shot they want every time."

Who buys this stuff???

Does anyone besides me find the claim a bit absurd that ONE photographer knows how to get every professional shot right "every time?"

That claim is practically false by definition.

And what kind of professional thinks the 5D is "complicated?" If you think a 5D is "complicated," I'm betting you aren't a market leader as a shooter... Cameras of today are so freaking easy compared to what people had to do in the film age. The 5D is a total cake walk!

I guess that's why I don't understand the market for books like this. I guess I'm glad I wasn't born stupid.

Oh, peace to all you placing pre-orders... ;-)

Isn't just announcing this book and thereby the Camera against any NDA?
Don't they make a big deal with just announcing a camera?

I kinda have the urge to find the author's e-mail and ask for some info.....(I will restrain myself though)

Ever since early last year, when I decided to buy the next model of the 5D Line, I have been waiting for any news. When I seen this (The first actual clue) I got excited.

The author must not be doing that bad
since she has earned enough respect from Canon
to get an early beta model of thier camera.

It was books like this that got me excited with Photography when I was first starting.

Besides I posted this thread to show that there may actually be a 5D Mark II released. Unless you just needed to find something to complain about. in that case I understand.

I doubt I will ever consider myself a great photographer,
but I am having lots of fun and learning more about it all the time.

Where do you read that she got an early beta model? What I read said it's not released, and another link has a release date of November 2008 (for the book). A lot can happen between now and then. Could it not simply be vaporware? If someone clicks on the author name on Amazon, they get a listing of other books by the author. Does the "existence" of other books give credibility to the author? Perhaps the vaporware 5D II book is simply a marketing gimmick to sell digital rebel books.

You took the words out right of my mouth Victor. :)

And from what I've seen fron Canon lately, they don't even know how to use their cameras, let alone some author. Vaporware is likely a major understatement.

This 5DMKII fever reminds me of the 1DMKIII fever, and look at what happened with that.

about overselling the book's powers, i don't think that it is untrue to say that the 5d is complicated. sure, you could pop it into p mode and never look back, but you sure won't be getting 'professional' results that way. how about the difference between using iso100 vs 200? how many people really understand the difference? i'll bet a lot of pros don't, and that they'd improve their results (very slightly) if they did. or, what about sensor cleaning? again, i don't know if 'complicated' is the word, but it isn't the easiest thing to learn, if for no other reason than because it is a high-stakes game. how about the various flash settings? again, you could go all-auto, but if you want to really master the capabilities, it is a lot more complicated than my old om3's were. etc. and that's not even touching on all the pp that can be done to a raw file, for instance.

otoh, you could pop in a roll of 400 neg film to any decent camera and get pretty good results, almost no matter what you do. so film need not be complicated, either.

all of which is to say, the camera is about as complicated as you make it. to really master it isn't simple.

just for a laugh... (obviously they're not going to reveal anything) I'll share just in case I might get some answer.

BTW, this forum has become some sort of "a yellow forum", doesn't it?

not the book of the 5D mk II!

;o)
Ya know, you may have something there. I looked at the Amazon page and it sure looks like it's about a 5DMKII camera, but that would be HIGHLY unlikely since the camera doesn't exist. At least it hasn't been announced by Canon, and even if it does exist it would be in the early stages of development (especially firmware) and I doubt that Canon would allow someone to advertise a book on how to use it yet, and especially let them publish 300 pictures from a camera that hasn't even been announced, let alone actually released.

Even though the release date for the book is in November, the text and pictures would be being edited right now. Book publishers don't wait til the last minute.

Does anybody know when it went to amazon? Would this announcement not bugger up some secrecy clause if some one was to receive a beta camera in the very near future???

Of course this book will exist, more likely that the actual cam, at least with this name as nobody knows what Canon is coocking, let alone a kind and unreliable author.

5DmkII, 3D, 4D, 6D who knows...

But the book will certainly exist and I bet Amazon did accept this kind of pre ordering page getting more money from the author royalties or somthing like that.

I'm also quite sure the author is already typing his book, commenting any of the existing Canon features sported by all the other models and that will very likely be on the forthcoming model or models

1) 14 bit
2) Highlights priority
3) NR on high ISO
4) Anti dust
5) Live view

How a obituaries can be ready the very day a person pass away ?? It's 95% ready and just needs to be updated and finished. That exactly what will be happening with this awaited cam. We all know Canon, it will be a good step forward but probably nothing revolutionary so Charlotte can announce the book, it will be available shortly after the actual arrival in the stores.

especially as the alleged author has already commented; see the post by Charlotte above.

Kind regards
