1DS and Computer

Home build Athlon XP with 3000+ (166 Mhz bus 2186 actual speed) CPU overclocked to 200Mhz bus and 2400 Mhz speed. It is like running Pentium with 3500 Mhz CPU. 1.5 GB of memory.

I can fit 88 RAW in 1 GB but if all RAW pictures contain sky then close to 120 can be fit on 1GB card. Same with JPG. At 10 setting fine more that 250 can fit on 1GB if sky is in the most of the pictures but 130 normal pictures.

Just out of curiosity, what type of computer beast must one have
to handle the massive files of the 1DS? And also, how many photos
(equivalent to a fine jpg size) in, say, a 256CF card?

My ultimate equipment goal is to own this marvel of Canon's genius.

Canon is the best then it is working.

I am a big Mac fan too, so I can understan where you're coming from... In my own case, such as editing 300 RAW wedding files, the speed makes a huge difference. It only takes a few seconds to open a RAW file on the PC, as opposed to (?) on the Mac. All the other facets of Photoshop are identical, regardless of the platform. I can't wait to get a G5 to use with our Media 100 system, but that is about all we'll use it for...
Why would I spend $1,000 dollars to switch to a system I'd be
unhappy with (I'm familiar with Wintel machines; without starting a
pointless Mac-PC flame war, I'll just say that they don't appeal to
me), when I already have a system which works fine for my needs and
is a joy to use? Faster photoshop speed is only one of a multitude
of facets of my overall user experience--a nearly irrelevant one.

I'm using an Apple (Titanium) G4 PowerBook with 1 gigabyte of RAM
and a 1 Gigahertz processor. It works great (though I only do the
basics like color correction, contrast adjustment, sharpening, and
dust removal--no serious manipulation).

I can fit about 80-85 RAW picture files on a 1 gig compact flash card.

I actually just tested this yesterday, to see how much impact the addition of zoom mode made. If I enable zoom, I got 50 images (24-70 at 70mm) shooting my living room. 55 images with zoom disabled.

On an empty 512 MB card, the LCD shows 40 shots available. I thought I was getting 45-46 in landscape shooting...

Do I sense a slight bit of disappointment in this statement?? :-)
Fraid so....don't get me wrong the 1Ds is a fantastic camera, but it's not perfect, it lacks in a few areas where the film camera is still ahead.

1, DUST
2, Dust, it's a big problem so it gets a second mention :-)

3, 3fps...S L O W, it's still faster than my 6x7, but nowhere as quick as my 1v 5fps
4, Buffer 10 frames, but film you have 36 in a matter of seconds

5, Battery power, has to be charged at the end of each shoot, 1V lasts for months

6, The start-up delay, it seams like hours when you can see a shot infront of you, and have to wait for the camer to start up

7, Changing cards takes longer than changing film more so when you have to wait for it to save it's buffer.

There are so many more advantages to the camera, like colour balance, ISO, instantness of the whole digital scene, but after using a 1ds for a few months, then going back to film you realise how slow that camera is to use.

But it's still the best digital camera out there imho

Turn that sucker on, and you can take a pic immediately.
There's no need to wait for the light to stop flashing.

Sorry, I wasn't clear...I used to leave my 1v switched on all the time while I was shooting, pull the camera to my eye and click, pic taken...I could do that with the 1ds, but it sucks up power, so I have it timing out after a minute, only problem is that when I go to take a pic I have to wait for the camera to rub it's eyes and wake up :-)

I pick the camera up, press the shutter, nothing happens for a second, which seems like a long time when yer waiting to take a pic
