Need a lens for night football games..

Hey guys, I am looking for a lens that does well under stadium lights for action football pictures. I have the Canon EF 70 -300mm f 4.5 / 5.6 IS Lens. I am looking for a lens that will tend to keep my shots from being blurry and looking to try and save money!

Thanks so much for your help guys!

Jason, Are you using flash? Which flash? High School games?

The lens isn't the issue as much as getting the shutter speed up enough to stop action with flash or without it for that matter. If you aren't using flash it's a tough one with a slow lens (meaning 4.5-5.6). With flash you should be able to stop action with a shutter speed of at least 1/200-1/160. Maybe not every time but most of the time you will get it to work.

Also wait till the players are closer to you rather than across the field it helps.

It's tough to save money when you want to shoot sports under low light. Generally you need a lens with a 2.8 aperture so you can let a lot of light in and keep the shutter speed up high enough and not blast out too much flash.

You might want to look into a fixed 200mm 2.8. I have one that was the first lens i used for just this type of thing. Sure it's not as easy to shoot action with a fixed lens but it's a cheaper lens than some and it's really, really sharp. I don't use it much anymore because I bought a 70-200 2.8 Canon (non IS) a while ago...but it's still a great lens and it's damn sharp.

I agree that you will likely need something that is f2.8 or faster.  I see the older USM 200 f2.8 was mentioned above and I would agree.  I have rented this lens in the past and it is fast and sharp with good AF.
