My favorite trick is to look for feivel's posts and do what he says.

My favorite trick is to saturate colors in a way I particularly like. I use it mostly with outdoor photos, though that's mainly because I primarily take outdoor photos. It generally brings out deeper blues in the sky and warmer tones in things that need them.

Take your image and make a duplicate layer of it. Use the 'Apply Image' tool in PhotoShop CS (Image-> Apply Image... -- you can also probably use Calculations or just do it manually with layers if you know what you're doing, but it's easy with Apply Image). What you want to do is blend in an inverted blue channel in hard mix mode.

In the Apply Image Dialog, choose Channel: Blue, click Invert, Blending: Hard Mix. At 100% opacity this will show you the colors you will be superimposing on your photo. Now bring the opacity down to 15-25% to see the effect. Sometimes the green channel is a better choice than blue.

Just tried out that trick on some of my landscapes, I really like the effect. Thanks for the tip!

French Connection,

Heck, I could not answer this in 2 or 3 steps. It takes me at least 6 big steps just to get TOO the computer. Then I have to open the lid, turn it on, sign on, open my email's first, then check CNN.com, then check GirlsGoneWild.....oops, wasn't suppose to say that one. Then I go into DPReview to find something to work on or help with. Argue with D123, or Fibel, or anybody else that wants to argue, THEN I open Photoshop. So, I am way beyond 2-3 steps already.

Re: What is your favourite trick?

My favorite trick right now is running impressionist twice and setting the top layer to overlay.

Also any of Mike Finn's actions

are great for a quick and dramatic change.

Re: What is your favourite trick?

I have 2 that I use all the time, both of which I picked up from someone else:

USM for contrast 25-30, 50-60, 0 Can be used in combo with "S" curves.

To tone down or eliminate USM side effects:
Double click seperate USM layer to bring up layer properties
Set mode to luminosity

Hold down alt(Windows) and drag/split white highlight triangle under "this layer" for the blend if sliders.

Set the left side to between 120-180 and the right side to 200-240 to eliminate or reduce highlight side effects from heavy sharpening of high contrast edges.

The other hints are great!

Feivel,

Your little trick uncovered a rainbow that I didn't know was there at the time of the shot! Thanks!

In PS7, I use the following steps sometines in order to fix color cast:
. Select "Curves"
. Select "Options"
. Select "Find Dark & Light Colors", and "Snap Neutral Midtones"

. If you not happy yet with the Shadows & Highlights, select the appropriate box then use the color picker or just move the little circle to where the ideal color for Shadows & Highlights

Actually, this is a way to tweak the algorithms of 'Auto Color'. To complete the tweak, I set the shadow/highlight clips both to '0.10%'. A great way to get better results with this underappreciated tool!
