Disaster in Firenze, bye O55

Hi

Today is one of my worst day in my life, 2 hours ago i was walking in a street of Firenze (Italy) when my little Optio 555 falls in a stone street, the lens were open so you can guess the results. :((

In square of Firenze currently there is a interesting concert, but nothing imports to me, when i was walking in the beatiful streets of Firenze i felt me without freedom, my O555 was the freedom and power to take all the pictures that i wanted, it was happpines, power and freedom in a small size. Just a week ago i bought a new memory card of 512MB in Paris (32x) in a excelente price.....

I'll miss you...

Ernesto

PD. You can guess that i need to be on the digital road again, so my questions are:

  • Currently there is another camera with 5MP/5xzoom that compares with the Optio 555?

  • What would be a reasonable price (in EUROS please) to buy a O555?? (in October i bought mine at 520€ + - using Nomatica.com)

  • must I wait for the O777, what would be its entry prince (i EUROS please)?? When it will be in stores?

Ma che c? #!

Maybe you should get an *ist D to replace it. Got a nice strap you can wrap around your wrist.

Do enjoy Florence in any case. Just go easy on the Chianti!

I feel your pain! Well, the 770 will be announced in Photokina and shoiuld be available shortly after. Same zoom, 7MP and swivel screen.
I cant find any O555's for sale anywhere. Think they are discontinued.

Re: Disaster in Firenze, bye O55

I have done the same, with my O550 (now I have the 555).

Well, try to send it to the aut. Pentax Repair. For free, you can get a repair-price before they repair the camera. So is it in Denmark, and I knowall the shops/storesl in Europe, send their cameras to Pentax in Nederland for repair.

I also know the lens is sitting in a small "box" inside the camera, and therefore "easy" to reapir. So it's mayby not so expensive.

Try it!

Good Morning Ernesto,

My extreme condolensces to you over the loss of your Optio and,
especially considering the circumstances. It is one thing to be
walking around your house or at work and drop your camera but
to be surrounded by the beauty and ambiance of Firenze or (m)any
other city in Europe is very much adding insult to injury. :((

Regarding the loss and replacement of the Optio 555, the store
where I work had a dinner with our Pentax Sales Rep and, yes,
the 555 is discontinued but there will be a replacement for it coming
along early this autumn amongst some other digital camera's and,
as difficult as it may be to do, I would definately advise you to hold off
purchasing a new camera until you have a chance to see the new
Pentax/Optio camera's coming out this fall.

I know a little about the specs and prices, albeit in CDN $, but I was
asked not to talk too much about what little I know of them....but
your story reminded me of a (nearly) similar incident whilst visiting
London so I just wanted to let you know that rather than running
out and buying a different camera straight away that I definately
think it will be worth your while to wait a little.

Once again, my condolescences.

Cheers,

Jack

I'll try to repair it, but i doubt it since i think that all the lens mechanism is broken, perhaps the reparation is the half of the price of a new one.

Worst: i live in Madrid and the spanish representative of Pentax is located in Barcelona.....

You're telling the right words Jack, i'm in the half of my vacations..it was my first day in Firenze and i have to go to Perugia before return to Madrid.

Ok... my concerns are: Memory cards, i have done a good investment in SD cards. Battery: would be compatible with the line of 450/550/555? Its because i bought a spare battery before my vacations.

Once again, my condolescences.

thanks

More concerns....

Also my concerns are with respect to the potential noise that 7MP will produce in such small sensor....

At this moment we don't know if the new 770 would be in the line (size) of the 450/550/555 or in the segment of Sony F828, Konica Minolta A2, Nikon 8700, if this is the case i guess that would be better try to find one of the lasts O555 in the market, because i don't want to carry on a big device.

What I ment was, that PENTAX alway repair the lens by replacing the box, which contains the lens AND the mechanism/"gear wheel" an so on. It's one unit.

I would definitely check it out, by sending the camera to PENTAX by mail.

Call them!

I feel exactly the same way and if I were in your same situation it would
be very difficult not to buy a new digi camera straight away.

I know a little about the specs and prices, albeit in CDN $, but I was
asked not to talk too much about what little I know of them....but

I know the SD cards will be remaining with the Optio line but I am not
100% sure about the battery size and if it would fit in the 555's
replacement as it supposed to be a tad smaller.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Jack

I have to wait for the price in Euros, but it looks that would be more than the price that i paid for my O555.

Good news, having a lot of spare batteries would be interesting

I'm not completly convinced since the 750 have less wide angle than the O555 but now i have more doubts about wait or send to repair, just wait what Reflecta says about reparations.....

My goal is to have a operative camera at the end of the year

Gracias

Hola Ernesto,

The difference in the wide angle is a mere 2.5mm (Optio 555 was
35mm - 185mm and the Optio 750 Z is 37.5mm - 187.50mm) so
there will be no discernable difference.

but now i have more doubts about wait or send to repair,

just wait what Reflecta says about reparations.....

I have been there and done that with a few camera's in my lifetime
and just had a customer in yesterday with the same quandary. Best
thing to do is to get an repair estimate and then balance that price
out against the "actual" selling price of the Optio 750 Z or a new
Optio 555, , if you can find one.

My goal is to have a operative camera at the end of the year

Hopefully you will not have to wait that long.

Morning Ernesto,

I am 99.9% sure that "Reflecta" will not send your camera back to
Japan to servicing. If they cannot do it at their local service centre
it may go to the nearest authorised Pentax service centre which could
be Pentax France or Pentax Germany.

What I suggest you do is to contact Reflecta and ask them if they will
be doing the repair there or will they sending it elsewhere and, if you
don't already have it....here is the Reflecta contact information:

Spain Reflecta SA

Europa 8
08028 Barcelona
Tel: 93 33 91 154
Fax: 93 41 10 121
e-mail: reflecta@reflecta.com

Also, what you may want to do is contact the shop where you purchased
the camera and ask the salesperson and/or manager if they could contact
their Pentax Sales Rep and/or Reflecta to find out what will be the chain
of events regarding your repair estimate. For this latter part, I am pre-
suming that things, in the respect, are the same in Spain as they would
be in Canada but every country is different and this is for every camera
manufacturer.

Hope this is somewhat helpful and all the best with your camera
situation.

Cheers,

Jack

My goal is to have a operative camera at the end of the year
