Any recommendation for noise reduction software?

Dear all,

I know the people in this forum are mostly professional photographers and probably not too crazy after doing photo effect, however, it is still necessary sometime for making better pictures. I myself like to use the noise reduction program to smooth out the model’s skin or give a clear look of the lake or etc.

Anyway, my question is if anyone of you can recommend a good noise reduction software. Also, it will be great if you can share some knowledge or tips for using such tool.

Wish to hear from you soon.

Most of the people here aren't professional photographers (despite the quality often displayed), they come from all walks of life.

The two most used noise reduction applications are Neat Image ( http://www.neatimage.com/ ) and Noise Ninja ( http://www.picturecode.com/ ).

It's probably six of one and half dozen of the other as to which is best. Users of either are happy with their product. Both offer free trials to see if it suits you work style.

Cheers

There are no limitations, only challenges - me (unless someone else said it first).

I'm not a pro, but a happy A1 amateur.
When making 100% crops, I use Neat Image.
It works as plugin in photoshop and works in 16 bit.
It is fine in auto mode, but can also use noise-profiles.

Another, free one is called "Noiseware". It may not give the level of control that Noise Ninja or Neatimage do, but it is easier (to me) to use. I had to shoot some concert photos under weak lighting, and I had to set my A2 @400 iso. The images were pretty noisy, but Noiseware made them look signifcantly better. It did so without much loss in detail, which was very important on these shots. Good luck. -Rick

A posting about a day ago mentioned using a program called "noiseware" which you can get from:

http://www.imagenomic.com/

and its free.

I tried it on a number of ISO-800 shots that I had taken and was quite pleased with the result. If you just use the default settings (which is all I did) you might find its smoothing out a bit too much detail. Anyway its certainly worth taking a look at.

One note, once you have processed an image in it and are looking at the result you can quickly view the original image by clicking on the processed image with your mouse, when you release the mouse button the processed result reappears.

This is a 1:1 crop that shows the typical ISO800 noise:

after noise reduction it looks like:

By accident I had left my camera set to ISO800 and took the following picture in full daylight (this is a 1:1 crop):

I'm very happy with the results from Noise Ninja. Many samples of before and after in my Minolta A1 evaluation gallery at:

...and the free version has the advantage to save in .bmp - no loss of data. The few times I have to use NR, this tool works great for me.
