Lost data on PNY Tech CF card...

I have a PNY Technologies 256MB CompactFlash card, a SanDisk card reader, and pictures are taken from Canon A80. I have lost all the images on the disk, and this is the second time this has happened. Is it something I am doing, is it a shotty memory card, what the hell. Had a bunch of images from a pheasant hunt we had today. I am pretty unhappy.

When I look at the drive in Windows Explorer, I see two folders and a file: the folders are DCIM & MISC. There is nothing in MISC and there is another folder inside the DCIM called CANONMSC. Inside the CANONMSC folder there are seven files. 104.ctg, 105.ctg, 106.ctg,107.ctg,110.ctg,111.ctg, & 112.ctg.

The file in the main drive is called BOOTEX.LOG. If I open that file in Notepad, it reads:

-- hide signature --

Checking file system on F:
The type of the file system is FAT.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You
may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended
that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.
Volume Serial Number is 782D-4D99
Convert lost chains to files (Y/N)? Yes
41639936 bytes in 41 recovered files.
Windows has made corrections to the file system.

259756032 bytes total disk space.
53248 bytes in 1 hidden files.
28672 bytes in 7 folders.
69976064 bytes in 94 files.
189698048 bytes available on disk.

4096 bytes in each allocation unit.
63417 total allocation units on disk.
46313 allocation units available on disk.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyone have any idea what this means, or if I can recover the lost picture files?

First, try to recover your images with this. http://www.z-a-recovery.com/digital_image_recovery.htm . Are you formating the CF in the camera or the PC? The camera formating is most recommended. Try shooting with a different CF to see if the problem still occurs.

Re: Lost data on PNY Tech CF card...

I've had three cards, sandisk, simpletec and lexar and cross my fingers, haven't had a prob with any. I've heard that Lexar is prob the most reliable and I use this for my most important shots (wedding formals).

There's a good deal going on the new lexar 40's right now..untill the end of this month with rebates. Supposidly the 40 pro card is guarenteed for life, and I found one deal on a 512 card with a $20 rebate plus a card reader and a software bundle of Lexar's 'Image rescue' (recovery for lost files should it happen)

Hey, I'm not a rep for Lexar..just a guy that wants to get their money's worth and have a little peace of mind in the product.

I suspect there are cheaper deals out there, but what price would you pay to recover an image that was trashed by your card...? (but I guess your'e already figuring that one out...sorry).

Anyway, Think I'll stick with Lexar for the time being. Good luck
