Alternatives to dpreview - before we leave....
6

Dear all,

let's discuss the alternatives to dpreview. Exisiting Sigma forums, creating a new one, asking other photography web pages to open a forum for us....

Whatever comes to your mind. Would be great to hear if you already have experiences with other Sigma web sites.

Let's not discuss why they close, nor complain that they do. No philosophic excursions...

Just let us think about alternatives which can keep us together as a group. The ones who find value in that idea. Some of us know each other for more than a decade.
It is the only photography oriented forum I am in, so I have no proposal from my side for now.

Ted has a blogspot.

He mentions it in the same thread above.

Does anyone have the contacts with Sigma company people or their international websites people to see if a user discussion forum possibly could be hosted via their websites?

The scope of having something that would perpetuate (?) is enormous.  Although my Facebook account is not active, they are the one account I can think of that would be a possibility

Good idea Rick. There is a Facebook group already which is called 'Sigma Cameras Users Group'

We could use that. PBase and Flickr do not really support discussion. Facebook would.

PS added: It's a public group with 2000 members, some names I recognize.  I'm a member but have never posted there.

probably best option - revive flickr groups?
1

As suggested above:

https://cameraderie.org/forums/sigma.153/

Reddit, e.g.:

https://www.reddit.com/r/sigmadp/

https://www.reddit.com/r/sigmafp/

But probably the best would be to revive Flickr groups. These were really active until a few years ago (before instagram attracted their users..).

I don't know how good it will/might be yet, but I created a "free" forum at a forum website, which has been around for more than twenty years.

https://sigmacameratalk.freeforums.net/

Does anyone have any interest in trying it? Apparently we can post photos there in our posts, and there is no "cost" to any of us to use it.

I'm going to post a photo there now. If you feel like it, please go ahead, and post a new thread there. I'll reply to it. Maybe someone else will too. I am thinking we need to try a few alternatives, before we will figure out the best one.

I don't like how Facebook sensors content, so I won't be a part of a forum on Facebook.

Behold, Facebook is absolutely no option for me and I think for a lot of other people, too. Please do not even think about moving over to Facebook, you would loose many forum members, which are strongly interested in following sigma. How can you even think to choose such a biased platform? We would come from the rain in the eaves.

absolutely no.

I sometimes visit the GetDPI "other cameras" forum, they have some big Foveon picture threads and a bit of discussion about Sigma/Foveon.

For russian language users quite a bit information can be found on https://club.foto.ru/forum/view_forum.php?f_id=523

Of course most users here can't build new community there, this was posted just as information resource.

Of the ones mentioned so far I think Cameraderie is the only one that already has a whole of Sigma group https://cameraderie.org/forums/sigma.153/ …and isn’t as widely boycotted as Facebook

I've participated in a couple of sd Quattro-specific groups on Facebook.

One was administered by a Russian, who went AWOL. As the group was public, it quickly became overrun with non-Sigma related nonsense.

The one I'm in now is private, but very quiet, and seems to be a place for the posting of photos only - little to no technical discussion of the type so common here.

Regardless of whatever else one might think about Facebook, it is (IMO) a lousy place for hosting the kind of threaded discussions that occur in a proper 'forum' format, and far from a suitable alternative for that reason alone.

Thanks for that fb group reference. I use a pseudonym with as much misinformation as possible for Facebook even though it is somewhat futile. Still, FB is probably the future for these kinds of discussions. Flickr had discussions back in the day but never recovered from instagram’s start.
