This forum has been such an amazing resource. Where is everybody going to be going to replace it?

It's a sad day

I think most here will likely end up on the cloudynights forum. Perhaps stargazerslounge too.

I simply cannot believe it. The amount of (searchable) information and valuable (at times heated) exchanges that will be lost is enormous. And that only comes on top of the loss of community that, although ever changing, has been some kind of an 'astro home' ever since I took up stargazing almost a decade ago.

I might check out Cloudy Nights and stargazerslounge, as per Leo's suggestion, but what is lost here can never be replaced.

I’m on Cloudy Nights as W5JCK. I haven’t posted much there as I tend to mostly hang out here. I’ll sign up as W5JCK on Stargazers Lounge soon.

I’m going to miss this forum. Some good friends here. Hopefully I’ll see them on the other forums. I want to thank all those who helped me get started in astrophotography and night sky photography 15+ years ago. I really appreciate all the help.

I currently do little more than meteor photography now since age and health prevent me from traveling to darker skies. I recently bought a Sony ZV-E10 and will be attempting to get into night sky videography, especially of meteors. Hopefully I will be able to acquire a Sony a7S ii (or higher) someday, but the ZV-E10 will serve as a video training platform until then. Darn good camera for $699!

Leo (@1DSmII) old buddy and mentor, and the rest of you meteor photographers and videographers, I hope to see y’all (yep I'm a Texan) on Cloudy Nights and/or Stargazers Lounge. You can also reach me at jack@w5jck.com. Thanks everyone for helping us all get better at capturing meteors!

Jack,

I'll be sorry to see DPR go. Fond memories and I have enjoyed the conversations we have had over the years.

It'll be strange not being able to log in here any more, but hopefully we can all stay in touch via the other forums. I think I prefer SGL as it's a little less formal, but we'll see where the chips fall after the dust has settled. I registered at both a few months back!

By the way, regarding the video side of things: Great timing (not!), but another low-light video astrophotographer just came out of the woodwork, and we have been comparing amp-glow/talking about related aspects here - there's also a parallel thread over on cloudy nights.

But getting back to the topic at hand, I'd like to echo Jack in saying thank you to all who have contributed on this forum!

I just found out the “parent” company is Amazon. I guess Jeff is too busy riding giant women’s sex toys into space to get in touch with reality. I get that DPReview isn't a money maker per se, but I suspect it fuels one helluva a lot of camera, lens, and equipment sales on Amazon. Maybe if he turned the Vibration mode down a few notches he could see that.

It really irks me that this huge camera and photography/videography database is going to be completely destroyed without any thought to archival value. For a man who made his fortune selling books online, you would think that he would actually understand the importance of preserving such a vast library of knowledge.

BTW, I’m now signed up with CN and SGL.

Bezos was never interested in books as valuable troves of information. They were merely a largely untapped means to an end: amassing money. When he used the Amazon platform to sell other things as well, it eventually achieved his goal in spectacular fashion. Now he can indulge his every fantasy, including making space ships in a shape that I can only assume relieves some feeling of personal inadequacy on his part. I mean, there are lots of possible shapes that are aerodynamic but somehow Blue Origin came up with that one.

Shocked to hear that the site is shutting down. I'm up for regrouping somewhere else.

Re: DP review shutting down, where should we regroup?

I joined DPR a month after I joined Cloudy Nights, 10 years ago. I'm still at Cloudy Nights, but spend a lot of time as an admin for a very large astrophotography page on Facebook as well. I think I am a member at Stargazers Lounge, but only post or visit there rarely. That may change.
It's been a lot of fun here, as well as the Nikon forums, I'm going to miss my daily check-ins.

I am already on CN. Joined in 2009. I never warmed to SGL (if that is a suitable initialism).

What contrasts this forum with the astrophotography forums on those other sites, is that nightscape astrophotography is (make that was) discussed here more often.

Every forum on dpreview is full of posts mourning this event. We all share the same loss of a place to learn and help others. I for one, owe a lot of my growth for astroscapes to this forum, so I thank you all. Meteor showers, Milky Way shots, etc, some is shown here:

https://igalbrenerphoto.com/nightscapes

I never looked too seriously at those other forums as they seemed too much into deep sky astrophotography which is not what I do. Somehow this forum had the right balance of that and landscape photographers like myself wanting to add Milky Way skies to landscapes.

agreed. I had accounts on most of those places (all now) but here is where “nightscapes” seem to be more appreciated and supported.

not sure where that will be next unless we all make it so

I'm really gutted by the news today. Though I signed up here only relative recently, I'm a longtime reader of the forums - especially this one - and I completely appreciate the people who have shared their thoughts and experience with the rest of us. There are too many of you to thank, so I'll just say thank you to everyone who has ever posted a photo or a method or a tip or some advice to the Astro forum. By sharing your knowledge and passion, you helped to grow this community. You helped strangers expand their skills and joy. Thank you for that. I wish you all clear skies.

Good Morning!
Still hoping it is just a hoax...
I've checked cloudynights and stargazerslounge and I'm not happy with both of them but cloudynights at least does have some dedicated user reviews, maybe I'm moving there.
best regards,

Hi!

I agree that CN was looking too much 'deep space' to me, but they have a general channel which also includes nightscapes (https://www.cloudynights.com/forum/79-dslr-mirrorless-general-purpose-digital-camera-dso-imaging/). So it's also up to us 'refugees' to move that channel in the right direction.

I hope to see you on the other side!

That indeed seems like a good place to start anew! Maybe that is worth a new thread here with the 'destination' in the title? And over there some sort of 'introduction' thread where we can all quickly introduce ourselves as friendly invaders from DPR origins? (lest they think we are hostile aliens)

For me personally, the problem is that I am currently unable to do much if any astrophotography. So actually that would make it even more valuable to know where I can re-find this nice community in the future!

Stephen

Yep, this is a real hit.

Over the past 12+ years I have learned a lot, shared some some of my "wisdom", reconnected with two professional colleagues, and made new internet friends. You, Stephen, were among the new internet friends. We compared solar eclipse plans and discussed an in person meeting in Idaho as you traveled across the pond for the event. (We couldn't make it work.)

One of my first internet friends was RustierOne, as we shared an interest in both lighthouses and astrophotography. He even scouted out a potential site for me on America's other coast. Many of you know Russ. He migrated to CloudyNights a few years back. I am a largely inactive member of that site, but if it is good enough for Russ, it seems like a a good place for us to land. Others have suggested that - this is a vote for that direction.

A question for you regarding April 8, 2024. Are you coming back across the pond for this one?
