Adding a date stamp on a picture after the fact

Hi,

Thanks for the forum!

I have taken some photos on my Nikon D3100(B) and then realized that the date stamp was not switched on. I need the stamp because it's for a record.

I have a late 2015 iMac running Monterey.

How can I add the date after the fact before printing it?

Thanks in advance.

On the picture or in metadata?

Do you mean on the picture itself - a date written on the image?
Or to add a date to the metadata, the information stored with the file saying when the picture was taken?

or is both necessary?

Assuming you mean writing it on the picture itself, I don’t use Nikon so I don’t know if there is a setting for it - if the date is for artistic effect, you could set your camera to the right date, take another picture, then pay some photoshopper on Fiverr to use the new picture as a template and copy over the date stamp. Should be extremely fast, and a few dollars.

Edit: would be particularly easy if you took it against a fully white background. Or leave the lens cap on and make it fully black. Not sure if black or white makes a difference. You could also do it yourself.

You can use any image editing software and superimpose the date on it yourself. The built-in Photos app on your Mac will do it. Instructions here.

Re: On the picture or in metadata?

Thanks Andersonm,

I need it on the photo when printed as it is for a legal requirement. The metadata shows it, but it won't show on the photo.

The camera was set up with the date stamp, but a relative was playing with it (thinking they were helping) and deleted that option.

Took me a while but I finally figured out how to get it back, but in the meantime I have to keep a notice up on my property for another month unless I can transfer it from the metadata somehow.
