Weird issue with RF 100-500 and 1.4x teleconverter

So I just received these and noticed after taking the teleconverter off that the lens will not close back down when turning the focal ring. It will extend to 500, but stops at around 300 as if something is blocking it, and I didn't want to force it. Has anyone experienced this?  What should I do?

What do you mean "close back down" and "focal ring"?

You know the Teleconverter only works between 300-500mm

The focal distance/zoom ring, and it wont go down to fully collapsed at 100mm

No I took it off. I know it has a limiter when it's attached. It's behaving as if it is though

Sounds like something is broken now.

Basically it's acting like the limiter is still engaged with the teleconverter removed. Ill call Canon.

I didn’t think that there was a limiter built into the 100-500 lens. I thought that the zoom was simply limited by the presence of the teleconverter being there.

So I called Canon and they said that it does have an internal limiter when the teleconverter is attached, and when you remove the teleconverter you have to click past the limiter and you'll hear a clicking sound which is normal.

Interesting. I just tried several times and couldn't reproduce the effect. Just once I heard a faint click shortly after removing the converter.

Hi drunkenjitsu,

It is 'normal' - excerpt from RF 100-500 User Manual...

I've had this happen a couple of times with the 2X. The first time really worried me, but in a second I discovered that just zooming the lens out a bit released the limiter. Not a biggie once you understand what's happening, but really worrisome the first time.

Now I rarely remove the Extender unless the lens is zoomed a bit, and the "problem" hasn't occurred lately.
