First critters this year ...
6

The critters are emerging! We had quite warm temperatures this week, felt a lot like spring. The bugs obviously thought so too.

Here three I saw. All pictures taken using natural light.

#1 - a fly resting on a magnolia bud; probably a Hylemya (a root maggot fly):

#2 - one of the many ladybugs I encountered, focus on its right eye:

#3 - one of a lot of green shield bugs I saw in a bush - this one still in its brown-reddish winter color:

Thanks!

It's interesting, isn't it?

Forgot to mention some data:

#1 almost fully open with a 2x TC - fly was not very near, so I also had to crop.

#2 fully open with the 90mm in S-Macro mode - magnification near 2x. Only slightly cropped.

#3 not that close, and stopped down to f14 to get better DOF. Slightly cropped again.

Is that the new 90mm macro? How are you finding it ? Most reviews seemed positive and with the mft gains it looks very interesting. I’m sure your having fun and  frustration getting used to it

Those are great!

Great images Phil! (and I'm not really into bugs)

The textures are so crisp!

Looks like the 90 pairs very well with the OM-1. I'm waiting for a copy of the 12 f/2.0 so I can go astro and try the Starry Sky AF.

It's indeed the new 90mm. I already like it a lot. Stabilization is excellent and C-AF works good enough for hand held work even in the region between 1x and 2x magnification. But the real star is the  focus clutch, making initial focus adjustment fast and easy.

So: A lot of fun, and astoundingly almost no frustration (wouldn't say none, because hand held work between 1x and 2x of course remains a challenge).

Thanks very much!

They really are. I find myself administering only tiny amounts of sharpening in PP - often none. With the 60mm that usually is considerably more.

Wonderfully!

Good luck with that, Gary! Don't fail to post your results.

That first fly looks a lot like the ones I have here that eat smaller insects.  They are fantastic predators.
