How heavy of lens can R5 Lens mount support?

I am looking for a solution for carrying my R5 and RF 100-500 lens.  I have tried a cotton carrier belt and it is too heavy.

I have found it is a pain and awkward to carry the combo by attached to the sling or belt using the lens foot.    Puts the camera and lens further away from the strop/belt and gets awkward.  Not too mention I have to remove the attachment device to using my monopod/gimbal.

Does anyone know what Canon recommends as the heaviest lens I can mount on this camera using the tripod mount on the body to attach to the sling/belt without risk of damage?

The 100-500 is about 3 lbs for reference.

Thanks,

Tim

I don't have any specifications from Canon, but I've used the Cotten Carrier and now use the Cotten Carrier Skout with the R5 and 100-500.  I often have the 1.4 on the combo.  I fasten the camera to socket, not the tripod foot (I don't even have the tripod foot attached to the lens).  No problems and I've hiked many miles.

Thanks of the reply.    I was looking at the vest but being in Texas the heat will list the use of that full best.  Do you find the scout is okay for this weight?

The 100 - 500 is not that heavy a lens when you consider other lenses that could be hung from the camera. If you look at sports shooters or if you look at press conferences and government meetings, you'll see professional photographers with the old  full metal bodied 70 - 200 mm f2.8 lenses or 300 or 400mm telephoto fast aperture lenses hung from the camera straps over their shoulders all the time.

I'm in Louisiana, so I understand about the heat concerns.  That's the main reason I bought the Skout, and I love it!  As light as the R5 and 100-500 combo weight in, it does a fantastic job of distributing the weight evenly!  My one and only complaint is more about the inability to retract the lens with the 1.4 extender, but that's due to Canon, not Cotten Carrier.  I'm 72 and use the Skout all the time, unless I'm needing two cameras, then I go with the full version Cotton carrier.

I have used Manfrotto CR2 quick disconnect system/s for many years, with release Heads on my Tripod Gimbal, & Monopod head.

With the CR2 Plate attached to the Lens foot, and a Trigger Snap Release attached to my $15.00 MOVO sling strap, I can quickly remove the strap, or just leave it attached, when mounted either on the Tripod, or Monopod.

Works quite well for me.

Any lens with a tripod mount on it

I think Canon sees it as, if the lens has a tripod mount, the lens is too heavy to consistently be supported by the body mount.

3 lbs are absolutely fine.

When I carry my 70-200/2.8 II I have the sling strap attached to the plate at the bottom of the camera and if needed I attach the lens to the tripid using the plate on a tripod collar on lens.

Quite true, and as to hand-holding it's expected that one would grip the camera, with one hand, with the other hand on the lens.

It's also a matter of balance on a Tripod. or Monopod; a 6-pound lens attached to a tripod at the Camera mount would challenge the sturdiest Ball-head from sagging down.

The O.P. was talking about a Cotton Carrier where the lens would be hanging down similar to a camera strap (https://www.cottoncarrier.com/products/grey-skout-camera). In this configuration, the lens would be hanging down as it would with a shoulder strap.

Almost everyone would change the RF70-200f2.8 and RF100-500 off a shoulder strap. The feet for both lenses are easily removable.

It is a different issue when the lens is at a right angle to the body as it is on a tripod. It is also more a matter of balance on the tripod, monopod, or gimbal, so the center of gravity is not so far forward. The RF70-200f2.8 seems light enough that I wouldn't worry about bending the mounting flange and would only use the foot with a tripod or the like.

I use the Peak Design Anchor tabs (https://www.peakdesign.com/products/anchor-links), and I will use one on the tripod foot with the RF100-500, but that is because it makes long lenses hang better with the lens-down.

Quite true but you still see press photographers and sports photographers carrying them by the camera lugs.
