R5 not writing to Card 1, intermittently

I disagree with this on the R5. The only slot that can be Priority is the CF Express slots. I, and I suspect many others, will use the MicroSD slot for "casual shooting" and downloading. The only slot you can make "Priority" on the R5 is the CF-Express slot. There is no option to give the SD card priority. Besides, as stated below, the assumed and thus desired behavior is to stay with the same slot until at least the switch on the camera is turned "on" (while "mechanical" it really is a software-controlled switch).

Yellow wrench menu 1, choose "Record func+card/folder sel." option, then in the "Play" and "Record/play" options you can set the priority card.

Yes, and I can't understand why this isn't the default. Maybe to avoid changing the behaviour from some older model which didn't have this option? (NB this is just a wild guess.)

As I wrote, the CF express is the only slot that can be the priority. And besides, this is not what many people would want/expect. The camera should not switch slots until the camera is turned on with one empty slot, better yet, it should warn you that the preferred slot is empty.

What I don’t understand is why these behaviours occur just in the R5.

I love how you are taking ownership of this, despite not mentioning it in your multiple previous posts.

I wasn't trying to take "ownership" of anything. I was responding to the sentence copied below that implies you can set a card when the only choice is the CF Express card. With all the back and forth, I don't assume that someone (myself included) has read everything in the whole thread. My only goal was to help someone that does not know how it works.

That I fully agree with. Canon's flawed logic is kind of similar to the behaviour where C1/C2/C3 settings which were modified during a session, silently reverted to saved settings when the camera went into sleep mode. The 'improvement' which is available with newer models/firmware, for modifications to be 'sticky', removes the option to revert when the photographer actually wants to. (Unless there has been a further improvement that I haven't seen?) It's as if these behaviours were chosen by a programmer, not an actual camera user.

I'm really big on user interfaces, should would the way people expect them to work, and if they don't, the interface design is a fault. Sometimes a feature is ambiguous as to the way it should work. In this case, the fact the physical switch just goes to software (which also means the camera is really in a low power state that drains the battery, rather than off ), and the camera sneaks a look at the card slots simply confuses people and is a doubly bad UI design. People find their battery drained and the card slot being switched, neither of which they wanted or expected.

Not to doubt you, but even the Original manual rev 1 has the priority enable option for the Express Slot (see page 735 of https://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/9/0300039689/01/EOS_R5_Advanced_User_Guide_v1_EN.pdf).

I think it could be that the priority lock feature is rarely used because it is so well hidden. You kind of need to know that it exists and what it does to look for it. Even then, if you search "priority" you will get more than 60 hits -- you need to search for "with priority" to find it).

I cant find any priority setting in the menu of my R6. Maybe this is because I am still using 1.5.0 firmware. As I wrote earlier, I leave slot 2 empty. This works for me and keeps things simple.
