Neutral vs. Standard

Ted, Don .. I'll put 3 photos from the DP3 Merrill in a new thread:
1. neutral mode
2. standard mode
3. standard mode corrected in HSL - green-blue (cyan) + 100 to blue
that is what i mean.
Ted, it's just a small thing, maybe it doesn't need to be paid too much attention to..it's just that I noticed it the most with DP Merrill..

neutral

standard

standard + HSL

corrected in HSL in Lightroom

Please look at the sky in all the photos, the blue is not the same in neutral and standard mode.

Do you have a similar experience? Peter

OK, Peter, I looked with my screen color-picker ...

Hue, Saturation, Brightness
Neutral: 213 deg, 51%, 68%
Standard: 209 deg, 51%, 67%
HSL Edit: 211 deg, 50%, 50%

With my poor color vision, barely any difference between Neutral and Standard, sorry. Your color vision must be excellent!

I'm trying to understand what this thread is about. Are you saying that the blue color of the sky looks to be  the wrong color?

Have you experimented with adjusting the white balance setting?

I see a difference when the two images are both on the screen together. But it isn't a big difference.

As you can see, the color of the sky in neutral and standard mode is not the same, in standard mode it is more green-blue than in neutral mode (it is not a fundamental problem, but it is a difference). The difference is most visible in the images processed from DP Merrill.
I was surprised by this discovery of mine a few years ago. Of course, the difference can always be corrected in at least two ways in HSL.
With this, I wanted to point out that even if the standard mode is considered to be color "balanced", it may not be true. It depends on which color of the sky is closer to someone - the color in neutral mode is closer to me. Color modes may not match our color perception. I will give two more pictures so that you can see the difference..

neutral

standard

No need to expand this thread further. It's just my observation that I wanted to share with those who notice the difference..

Thanks for paying attention. Peter

This is certainly something to watch out for when processing images.

I think in almost all cases, the exact colour of the sky is not important for the success of a picture, but there will certainly be some landscapes where it matters.

Back in 2015 -- 2016 I did a lot of shots of clouds, and processed them in Foveon Blue mode. The aim was to get a good contrast rather than accurate colour. I wasn't aiming for meteorological exactitude.

Re: Neutral vs. Standard

In the Neutral mode, I add the orange color and in the Standard mode, I reduce the contrast and fine-tune the blue color of the sky. Both mods can be tuned very well and the result is excellent. But in Neutral mode I like the blue and green colors more, they seem more realistic - in Standard mode there is a lot of orange/red (photos attached) mixed into the green and the trees are reddish. Shadows and highlights are better rendered in Neutral mode, the contrast is not as aggressive as in Standard mode.

Thank you Iain. I am very glad if it is at least worth noting. I like "pure colors", it's my personal vision of colors, maybe someone else doesn't see it the way I do.. I like your colors in photos, I always like to look at them.

Peter

PS: I apologize for the first photos, the photos are dark. These last two are already OK.
