Got shipping information from B&H this March 16th for 2 R50 black bodies.
Ditto on the two lens kit.
It’s M-like in size and handling. Cute little box. I like the handling a bit better on the R50 vs the M50, Canons not crazy.
It is sad the wasted space on the mount when viewing the rear elements on the lenses. Shame on Canon for killing the M.
Battery should be charged in time for the fair. Glad it arrived early as the R3 attracts tons of attention. Last time I went to the fair, my iPhone got stolen. Like who steals iPhones these days? You know they’re gonna get bricked by the owner… I digress.
A ton of folks talk about weight but not as many talk about drawing as little as attention as humanly possible. That is where I think the R50 should shine.
I don't know why they don't offer as a R50 combo pack, with the Canon RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Lens. That would be my starting point. Maybe they do elsewhere, I have not seen that here in the US.
Usually each yr, up until what happen 3 years ago, I would routinely visit our best buy store and see the latest and greatest gear and lens. Seeing how this and the R10 are lower cost models, hopefully when I go next time, both with be on display. I like to handle/touch before I buy.
The R50 has a 18-45 and 55-210 option, which I went with. If it’s any good like the M50 + 15-45 and 55-200 is? Should be a winner.
There is a lot more to camera systems than apertures… This thing is, very, capable.

Camera sync, SOOC
nice, I think you'll enjoy that 55-210
though I would have guessed you'd get an R10 + RF 18-150 to start out with
I wanted to go with all newly designed RF optimized glass. The RF 18-150 is an adapted M, which means there’s no super software correction accounted for in the optical formula.
I get hunches about things, this being one. The R3 and 28-70 were others.
The R50 was a great answer for my compact outdoor needs. Canons really giving smartphones competition with this guy. I can’t say that about the M. The R50 solves my gripes on AF and shutter shock from the M but goes a step further with really good SOOC 4k, and really good JPEGs. I’ll setup a gallery, maybe tomorrow, still have extended family over so may be a few days but this thing has bite. My only gripe is 15mm would’ve been nice. And the 1/3 stop on the short end. But the pickup in IQ, AF completely outweigh the loss. It’s not even close. So long as glass you want is available, this thing kills the M50. Canon needs to fix that.
Canon RF-S 55-210mm F5.0-7.1 IS STM looks good with that AF in good light
the other lens isn't worth it - iphone instead
m is about m6II, 11-22, 32, which iphone doesn't compete
The 18-45 isn’t a very aggressive lens on paper,
29-72 f7.2- f10 for $299
but it resolves color contrast and sharpness the iPhone can’t.
the 2 lens kit price was a good deal, but I wish the lens started at 15 mm vs 18
Canons come some ways with its JPEG with the R50, enough that smartphones haven’t made crop irrelevant just yet. The contrary in fact.
you've shown the R50 with its AF + Canon RF-S 55-210mm F5.0-7.1 IS STM beats iphone
I would buy that
but I just wish the other lens had 15
I sincerely hope Canon gives the new AF and JPEG engine to older Canons, my R3 included. I’ll discuss both soon but Canon isn’t leading on here, the R50 isn’t a shock, but a welcome surprise in the processor department.
Fro says the R8 AF beats the Z9
Not all DIGICX are created equal… I suspected this before, now I’m pretty certain of it as the R50 has advanced AF algorithms, metering, WB, and JPEG sharpness compared to even my R3.
do you really need $10K worth of R3 + 28-70 f2?
I'd sell, save $7500, and get R8 + RF 24-50 (for the 24 mm), RF 85 f2 + RF 35 F1.8 - much more likely to carry
and the two cameras with the primes would give you fovs of 35 , 50, 85, 135 - the portrait fovs vs your 28-70 which doesn't go beyond 70 for those portrait ops
Enough to make it look like a dinosaur.
yikes
Ok, in all seriousness, I’m witnessing about 2 generations of advancement in software on the R50 vs my R3. Odd considering the price points of these things.
You have enough info now to sell and buy
lighter weight rules
Fro may be correct. The R50s AF is very powerful, oddly more than even my R3. Canons up to something. I suspect the DIGICX in the R50 is different from a hardware perspective, but, I’m hoping it’s software coming to a future firmware update for R5 and R3 owners. I gather it’s hardware and software.
we shall see, but I'm glad they took the leap with the R6II and R8 too
The R50 and R3 serve very different purposes in my arsenal.
sure
Neither replaces or “rules” another.
sure
I’ve been beating both up this weekend.
that is good
The R3 has been doing indoors or prime needs,
it is very expensive pro combo you have, I would leave it at home, and only take it on trips if I were being paid
the R50, outdoor and low profile needs.
that tele-zoom you have looks ok for filling the frame
Both would be inappropriate in reverse circumstances.
true
Alternative options would be a compromise of sorts.
true again, but everything is a compromise
An R8 would be huge with a telephoto attached at the events I’ve been attending.
I'll address telephoto below, but first of all, the R8 + 24-105 stm ain't that big and would win almost everytime against your R50 setup for the MAJORITY of shots one would take - normal zoom range shots - that for me would be hard to swallow with a R50 normal zoom setup
that is a huge % of shots that you will take out and about
Now I do miss 15mm, but the trade off is worth it.
for me, no it's not, we disagree, that normal range setup is not winning against an R8 + RF 24-105
Canon needs to produce an ultra wide crop lens for RF.
yes they do, something like an 11-22 RF-s -- but without 24 on my main zoom, I'd be switching lenses way too often - and having to carry more lenses -- Canon knows this and drives better solutions, like 24-105, to FF
I’ve got a ton of shots, I’ll be sharing thoughts and images eventually. Right now I’ve got some up on Flickr for expediency. Sharing on DPR is slow. They gotta fix their hosting.
if it were me with your funding for the best compromises, when out and about, no way would I carry $10K enormous R3 + RF 28-70 unless I was being paid. And I go indoors a lot, museums, etc.
everything is a compromise, but I'd recommend the R8 + RF 24-105 F4L with dxo PL6 that will handle both indoor and outdoor when you are out and about
you seem to like that tele lens for your R50, so put that in a shoulder bag also and carry two cameras each with the lenses mentioned with no lens changes - no lens changes is a huge advantage - have them ready to go from a shoulder bag with just a wrist strap on each
also for me, the pop can size RF 70-200 F4L is not too big, and has its foot into the inside door vs your outside contingencies.
I've commented on your noisy apsc pics in the past as the lights go down - and offer the improvements above for not much more weight/size
