R5 Firmware update - Free or by subscription?
1

Given all the rumours, speculation, "leaks", insider information,  talk, jibber/jabber etc it is possible that any firmware update could be both substantial (and worth while), and while is no doubt some "cut and paste" from developments/improvements elsewhere in the R system there will have been some development and integration costs.

So will be charged for? Could it? maybe even should it - after all a worthwhile Firmware up grade is  bound to be cheaper than the subsequent hardware improved R5II.

And too some payments to cover costs make gain some financial now return than seeing no return until the new R5II is shipped.

What do others think?

I suspect that unless there is a video license that needs to be paid for then it would be free.

As much as Canon would love to somehow tie a subscription fee to the firmware update, I don't think they will. However don't think for a second that they're going to give you something in the update that will negate your desire to buy the R5ii when it comes out next year!

Why would they take a small portion of your money for an incremental upgrade when they could charge you full price for a new body?

I dont see canon adding anything via firmware that would be substantial enough to warrant a price, that wouldnt cause their potential customers to stop with "good enough, might as well skip the new body".

If the firmware was a good upgrade then the new body might be later than next year.

(Give Canon time to get the R1 to market....)

Has Canon ever charged for a firmware update? I don't think so.

I think once and related to video if my memory is correct. I just recall it was for a license reason and the cost was passed on. Maybe someone else can remember the details.

That is in camera because you can unlock the feature with third-party app.

This included a hardware change and required you to send in your camera.  I don't think this is the same thing.

Egad, don’t even suggest this!!!

I would indeed appreciate anything that takes the R5’s operation closer to the R6ii, but I want it for free!

Not sure what you mean.  You need proof that you could send your 5DM4 in for a hardware upgrade for $99? Read the link.

"Update: Canon has clarified its original statement. It now says that no hardware change is made but that, 'due to the software architecture in the camera we need to connect and use our service tool to upgrade.' The company also says that non-C-Log versions of the 5D IV will continue to be sold."

That part?

In just over 20 years of owning Canon digital ILCs I've never known them to charge for any FW update.  Not saying it can't happen, but they would rather sell you a new camera

So it's not a simple FW update that an end user can do on their own.  Makes sense then that they charged for it.

Doesn't count: "The update, which we were told includes an unspecified hardware change"
Edit: I've read the rest of the thread and amend my statement to say it doesn't count because hardware the user doesn't have is required.
