Thanks for helping me buy the RF100-400mm :)

I don't usually photograph birds or animals, but I was out at the Cosumnes River Preserve yesterday (along I-5 just south of Sacramento, CA) checking out the flooded landscape. I took the R7 and the EF 70-200mm f/2.8, and ended up trying to capture some birds. First, that's much harder than photographing trees. And second, 200mm just isn't long enough (yeah, I knew that before I went).

This post is just to thank the members of this forum who provide such awesome commentary about all things EOS R, because last night I went ahead and bought a refurb RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM lens direct from Canon for $520. It goes for $600 new, $650 full retail, and there are still some refurbs available if anyone else is interested.

Steven,

your note of thanks is refreshing. I am glad you were helped by this community, which I myself also find to be so encouraging at its best.

I enjoy your photos — the layers of clouds in the first are remarkable and the colours are cheery. (We are still in winter mode here!)

My impression of the second photo is that the bird is walking out of the water, saying “I’ve had enough of that, thank you!”

Thanks for sharing.  I have sent you a private message.

Thank you for the input. I am torn between RF 100-400 or EF 100-400 II myself

Price difference in a used EF version and a new/used RF version is about 300-400eur max but the weight and size difference is substantial.

Steven:  you "did good".  I like both your photos, and I heartily agree that the RF 100-400 is a gem, and much much easier to carry around than the 100-500L.
