Opinions on RF 28-70 F2 vs RF 24-70 F2.8

Hi all,

I would like to seek you guys opinion on the RF 24-70 F2.8 and RF 28-70 F2. I own the RF 24-105 F4 which is my everyday lens. The image quality and the zoom range are great and versatile. Recently, I sold some of my gears and thinking to fund a RF 24-70 or RF 28-70. I am going to keep my RF 24-105 but want a large aperture zoom lens. Initially, I was thinking the RF 24-70 F2.8 because the weight is lighter and the price is cheaper, but seems not a big difference compared to RF 24-105 F4 although 1 stop of aperture difference. Then I am thinking about the RF 28-70 F2, the aperture of this beast is 2 stop larger than F4, superb image quality but the weight and size is bulky and heavy, of course the price too. If I get the RF 24-70, will I regret of not getting 28-70 in the future ? Next month I will travel to Japan for family holiday, is the RF 28-70 too heavy and inconvenience for travelling ? Anyone who own RF 28-70, are you willing to carry this beast for holiday or travel oversea ? Thanks

This seems like a good reason to go with the 28-70 rather than 24-70. The 28-70 with its f2 does rise to a unique level.

I normally I don't have any problems taking photos for an extended period of time with the 28-70 - it's heavy, but not "awkward to hold and makes you tried after a few minutes" heavy like a 150-600, say.

As far as vacations, I have not brought it, but I would normally not bring the 24-70 either, but rather 24-240, or maybe something like the 24-105 if I had one. Or more likely a lighter setup like the M6II.

The 28-70 would be fabulous on a vacation for many cases, but you may need to supplement both the long and wise ends with other lenses.

Agree with this 100%.  But for vacations, it’s the M6ii all the way.

Thanks, I have a RF 100-400 zoom lens in my travel bag, this lens is light weight with great optical quality. I don't have a 24-240 and I know this is a very nice zoom lens.

I sold the EF 24-105 for the RF version and regretted it.

I was concerned over the lack of IS which is still a concern and the reduced focal length may have to be made up by using my feet a little more.

Mine is insured, 28-70s attract attention good and bad.
The M and upcoming RF-S really are up to task here. Lightweight, don’t draw attention. I do drag my 28-70 all over the place, vacations included, but there is a time for everything.

If you’re seeing special people? Yes. It’s meant to do events. I should’ve taken it to California last family visit and didn’t. Sight seeing? Consider an R10 and 18-150. Done.

I'd go with a prime or two instead since you are keeping the 24-105mm. I rented the 28-70mm and just doesn't have that special rending of the 1.2 lenses. Yes it is is a little better than the 24-70.

Re: Opinions on RF 28-70 F2 vs RF 24-70 F2.8

I was debating between the two and ended up buying the 24-70.  My reasons below:

  1. I was already concerned about the weight/size of the 24-70.  And I knew I would probably never want to travel with the 28-70.  The 24-70 is already giant compared to my EF lenses and is on the edge of being too big to take when packing light.
  2. I wanted that extra wide angle to 24mm.  I really like wide angle shots and having that extra 4mm is meaningful to me.
  3. I wanted image stabilization
  4. Unlike a lot of people who say the 28-70 removed their need to buy primes, I like primes and will be buying the RF 35L whenever it comes out.

But, everybody has their own reasons, so I'm sure many would opt for the 28-70 and of course be very happy with it (as I'm sure I would have been if I'd gone for it).

ah... I checked the spec again, the size of RF 28-70 is 104mm x 140mm and the 24-70 is 88mm x 126mm, it is bulky and big compare to 28-70.

also I don't want to draw people attention to look at my camera and lens which I am in the street or on vacation.

For the price in Australia, now it is on sale the RF 24-70 is AUD3230 and the RF 28-70 is about AUD 4250, 1K difference.

I will go to the camera store this weekend to look at the size of these beasts. Hope they have the display I can play around

Before we bought the 28-70 I was concerned over tha lack of IBIS. People here basically between them said it's not an issue. I can't say it is or isn't at the moment.
