RF50/1.8 vs EF-M32/1.4

Anyone here compared the RF50/1.8 vs EF-M32/1.4? I am trying to find reasons to not buy the $200 RF lens.

the reason that I bought the m32 f1.4 and M6II is that it is sharp wide open across the frame and resolves the 32.5 mpxl sensor

the 32 f1.4 is the FF equivalent of 50 fov f2.2

unfortunately though the 50 f1.8 has to be stopped down to f2.8 to be sharp enough for me, particularly if you are not focusing in the center of the frame

RF 50mm of full fame or crop?

A while back, Alastair Norcross was posting comparison samples here with equivalent lenses on his M6 II and R. I think the RF 50mm might have been part of that comparison.  Can't find it right now.

Larawanista also did a similar comparison using the M6 II and R6.

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/65322104

While the 32mm is a very sharp lens, the basic gist of the testing was that it was not overwhelming superior.  The RF 50mm on a full frame body is actually pretty good.

Yeah, it'd be RF50 on R body vs. EF-M32 on M6II. I am curious to buy it just to find out. Another appeal of the RF lens is its low weight of 160g. It's in stock at my LCS 15 minutes away...

I can’t give a direct comparison, as I don’t own the RF 50mm 1.8.  That being said, I doubt it’s that much different from the EF “nifty fifty” which everyone has owned at some point.

In my experience the 32mm would drastically out-resolve it wide open, and is easily the best lens for APS-C that I’ve ever used.

Unless I absolutely need some other FL, it lives on my M6II. The best walk around combo.
Best IQ for the size, weight, and cost, that I’ve ever encountered.

It gives you pretty much FF IQ in a much smaller, lighter, and cheaper package.

Both of those lenses are limited in what they will fit.

I have about had it with lenses like that.

An EF 50mm f/1.8 may not be as good as either of those lenses but it sure will mount on a lot of different cameras, R and M too.

And I keep running into great deals on cameras with mirrors that I like to fix up or play with and sell and I like to see how they perform with different lenses.

I am not investing in anymore glass that is not EF.

I am the opposite. I am not investing in EF glass anymore. And I ain't adapting any lenses in my EF arsenal on the R or M cameras. Native, bare-back all the way.

Yes I see a R8 in my future. And I am keeping the M6II.

Lenses that will work great on both interest me.

One of the reasons I like the 100L so much is how well it works on every Canon camera I have mounted it on.

Is the EF 35mm f/2  USM like that ?

The M6Mii with the EFM32mm f/1.4 is an unmatched combo, pound for pound. Topnotch value for money. There is simply no lighter combo that can deliver such results.

Tried it with the RP (quite light) and the RF50mm isn't comparable to the stellar images I've captured with the M6Mii with the EFM32mm. Tried it with the Sony A7C and the "closest" I've gotten to such impressive image quality is with the Sigma 65mm f/2. Heck of a lens, but yes it's a slightly heavier combo.

The 32mm is very sharp, and the rendering and bokeh is more beautiful. You don't need another lens next to it for portraits.

The RF 50mm f/1.8 is a good lens at f/4.0 or f/5.6, but it's not the best lens for portraits with a shallow DOF and smooth background.

I owned the EF 35 F2 IS for years.  I liked the lens both on my 7d2 and 6d.  But, it needed a bit of stopping down, at least to f2.2

When I got the m32 f1.4 on m6II, I didn't use the 35 f2 IS on crop after that because the m32 is so good.

On FF, I did like the EF 35 F2, but I decided to sell it recently to help fund the R8.  I'm more of a zoom person at 35 mm and my F4L zoom serves the 35 mm focal length - with dxo deep prime NR

It works on the M6II  WITH  stabilization. Shooting non moving subjects in low light needing DOF it's better than the 32mm. The IS gave me some great shots. It also has fast AF. The lens works on the 6D. It works on the R5. If I don't need fast AF it will probably work on the A7IV as well.

But I'm not using it. On full frame it's not my focal length. I should sell it, just like you did. But I won't. I just like that lens.

like you, 50 fov is my focal also vs 35

in the old days, I loved the 35 IS on my crop cameras because I didn't embrace normal zoom.

these days, I liked the lens, but didn't love the lens

these days I embrace my RF 24-105 F4L with the great noise redux of dxo PL and soon the great AF acquisition of the R8 in low light - a whopping -6.5 EV @ f1.2 and -3.2 EV @ f4 - it will focus in moonlight

so for me, I also don't like adapting lenses, the 100 L being the exception

If I need to buy back 35 fov, I'll get the RF35 f1.8 IS to be the two prime combo with my RF 85 F2 IS

the advantage over m's f1.4's being the IS on these good primes

I found my best yet EF-M 15-45mm that I think is good enough to use at the car show this weekend.   $48 at MPB. It is silver.

Will see what PL6 can do with that lens.

If I find an EF 35mm f/2 USM then I would have 2 sharp prime lenses with IS that would work on a R8 and my M6II.

yes indeed, 35, 100, on R8 great classic portrait combo

and 160 fov with the 100L on m6II works well for me too

I don't understand what you are asking.  I own both lenses.  Both are excellent.  but they are made for different cameras.

Psst... They both give an ~ 50mm FoV and comparable shallowness of field. If you don't understand the question, well, let it go. Cheers.

When chosing a camera you should chose your glass first. Hence the question.
