Portland Oregon At Night
2

Last month I had an opportunity to take pictures in Portland Oregon at night. It was a blast. I hope you like the photos.

Photo No. 1 - This was one of my first pictures and I think my favorite.

Photo No. 2 - You can see "Portland" in the sign.

Photo No. 3 - A very dark scene....

Photo No. 4 - The light rail train is seen in the distance, giving me some better illumination.

Photo No. 5 - Wide angle distortion is what we can expect sometimes with short focal lengths.

Photo No. 6 - A "street" photo with people....

Photo No. 7 - Another one....

Photo No. 8 - At the town square there was this lighting exhibit.

Photo No. 9 - We see another "street" photo. Notice how I had to keep the focal length short, aperture wide open and the ISO level high, which was typical for a lot of these street scenes.

Photo No. 10 - Some of these photos that showed the street along the train tracks were some of my favorites too.

Photo No. 11 - Some more buildings....

Photo No. 12 - And one more....

Canon EF-S 18–135mm f/3.5–5.6 IS USM

The Canon EF-S 18–135mm f/3.5–5.6 IS USM is one of my favorite zoom lenses on my T6s and 80D. Here are some images created with it.

Ah...very nice photos, some in bright sunlight.  You probably told me, but I forgot.  What city is that in your pictures?

About the lens...oh yeah, I agree.  As you probably know, I use that lens on one of my  Canon T7i (800) cameras all of the time.

Thanks.

The first two were created in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. The last two in Montreal, the second biggest city in Canada and the largest French-speaking city in North America.

A great versatile zoom lens, indeed.

Thanks. It was SOOC JPEG from 80D, with AWB (W). Great light helped, too.

Two “Canada Goose” Families

These were created over 3 years ago. At present, it is still snowy and cold where I live.

Re: Two “Canada Goose” Families

It's good to see the families.  The Canada Geese visit Oregon a lot, on their way up and down the continent.  Every spring I look forward to seeing the goslings.  Some of the Canada Geese reside here permanently.

Re: Portland Oregon At Night

Thanks.  If you were able to do that at night like I have, I'm sure you would be amazed.  These newer cameras make all the difference with the high ISO levels.  Maybe sometime when you are on vacation visiting a city or town, you could try it out.  Most of the time for me, the exposure is perfect right out of the camera (with center weighted and nine center AF  points).  Also the AWB works well in those dark street conditions.  Next time I might experiment a little by increasing the focal length a little to reduce the wide angle distortion.

Re: Catching up

Your birds in flight are amazing; I love seeing them...great one of the wood ducks...they fly crazy fast.  Mostly all I get are flying geese.   I don't have the patience to wait for the ducks to fly and there are too many trees nearby.

But I saw one photographer that did have the required patience.  He set up his camera and lens on a tripod and just waited.  As soon as he would see them coming in for a landing towards the pond, he would start snapping away.  But he could wait for a very long time.

That's great to see the black hawk.  One time I was able to get close to a hawk like that, where it would let me get within about 10 feet of it.  I don't know why, but it was so hot that day that I thought it just didn't want to move.

I know what you mean about having the wrong camera or lens.  Sometimes I think about that...like last Saturday I brought with me three cameras and three lenses to a people event.  It was really too much gear.  But when I was taking pictures with one of my cameras and lenses (the 55-250mm lens), it started to lock up.  So I would shut it down and then start it again...only to have it lock up again.  I was thinking I was glad I had that extra camera and lens (the Canon M50 with the 55-200mm lens).  But before I abandoned that locked up camera, I decided to change batteries instead.  That solved it.  But we never know what we might expect, so having more is better sometimes even if it's a little extra weight.

So, what's your story?  Why did you have the wrong camera and lens?  I was looking at a RF lens like that...just looking...wondering if some day I might want to buy a R camera too.  Is that a new lens for you?

Re: Show Your Snaps...March 13, 2023

Actually I went out hiking , I just wanted a few landscape and waterfall photos , maybe a few people .I decided to take along my original EOS-M camera with what I thought would have been and all around lens . Long story short , when saw the bird just sitting there and allowing to me to get close .I decided to get as much photos as possible with it but the camera and lens combo just won't focus properly on the bird . I had originally planned on taking my M50 adapted to the 55-250mm, what a mistake in leaving that at home .
