Greetings from new Canon user
13

Hi everyone,

I've been a forum member on DPReview for a long time. I've been a Panasonic Lumix m4/3 shooter for years. However, I always wanted to get a full frame mirrorless camera. My last camera was a Panasonic G9 that I purchased in 2018.

There is currently a March sales event for Canon products and it felt like it was a good time to get into the full frame market.

This past weekend, I sold all of my Panasonic gear and purchased a Canon R6 Mark II with the 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8. I'm very happy with the kit so far.

I was torn between the R5 and the R6 Mark II. Truthfully, I still am and I do have the option to switch to the R5 within my exchange window with the camera store.

My main photography is of buildings/landscapes etc. The extra resolution of the R5 is appealing as I do like to crop in post processing. You can see some samples my photo here in the gallery.

Anyway, it looks like I'll be spending my time here in the Canon EOS R forum going forward.  It's exciting to learn a new camera system.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to learning from you all and hopefully can contribute also.

Ken

R5 versus R6 Mark II: I think it all depends on how big you plan to print your images and/or how much you tend to crop. I have both the R5 and R6 cameras and find they are so similar that I need to look at the file names to tell them apart when viewing the images. The R5 does have a few enhancements such as being able to save the camera settings on a memory card in case you need to reset the camera. If you don't plan to make huge enlargements or if you don't plan to do any aggressive cropping, I can't see any reason to spend the premium for the R5.

I don't have either of those lenses but I do have RF 24-105 and 24-240. 24-105 was my favorite with DSLR's but the 24-240 is my fav with R5.

Regarding R5 vs. R6 II, I doubt that I could tell the difference looking at the photos. My first DSLR was a Canon Rebel XT with a 3rd party 18-200 lens in 2005 for a cruise to Greece and Turkey and those photos still look good.

Welcome aboard.

Personally, as someone who enjoys landscape/cityscape photography, and who uses an R5, I definitely do recommend it, especially for your uses. The R6ii can definitely do the trick. But if you're not going for 40fps ES, I think the 45MP gives you better flexibility for this kind of stuff. And the R5 can shoot action fairly well, too.

Welcome aboard.

For your purposes, I would recommend the R5. I am an R5 user myself, for all sorts of stuff, including some landscape/cityscape photography. I think you'd definitely benefit from the 45MP much more than you'd benefit from the 40fps ES on the R6ii. The cameras are definitely more similar than different overall, though.

According to reports of a new firmware update dealer meeting to be held by Canon, the R5 should be getting new features in the future. Obviously, it can't get the hardware features of the R6ii, though.

Welcome!

As I'm primarily a wildlife shooter I'm currently an R7 user, but my long term plan is, depending on the specs, to upgrade to the R5II when it's released. I've been a Canon shooter since I purchased my first SLR in 1971, with a brief detour into Minoltaland in the 90's.

Your screen name caught my eye because I had a (long since departed) friend whose sailboat was the Sea Dragon; we enjoyed many a cruise together!

May you always have fair winds and following seas!

Congrats, I took advantage of the sale too. Everywhere was backordered on the R6 MK Ii except Robert's Camera.

I also debated between the R5/R6 Mk Ii, but the 30min record limit and $1200 price bump swayed me towards the newer tech.  Nothing wrong with picking up an R5 later if I really need to crop a lot.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!

As tempting as the R5 is, I think I'll stick with the R6Mk2 for now as I get experience with the Canon system.  If I were to get the R5, I would also need some CF-Express cards whereas I have several SD cards I am using with the R6.  The cost to upgrade would be somewhere in the 2.5K range.

Plus, with the rumour of the R5Mk2 on the horizon, I would probably take a look at that when I comes out eventually.

For what it's worth, the R5 does work perfectly fine with SD cards, though it only has one SD slot alongside its one CF Express slot.

I wouldn't hold my breath for the R5ii. It probably will come in about a year in terms of actually being released. Though I'm sure it'll be a good camera if you're lucky enough to be able to buy one from the first batches!

Yes, I'll definitely check out the R5ii when it's released, even if next year.

I also debated between the R5 and R6II and ended up with the R6II.  Would I like the extra resolution?...  Probably... but I can't say I've found 24mp limiting as of yet.  Also, I find that I'm already filling up hard-drive space pretty quickly as it is with these "tiny" 24mp files.  Not sure what I'd do with thousands of 45mp images.

In the end, I’ve decided to keep the R6 Mk2 and instead purchased the RF 15-35 2.8 to complete my 2.8 holy trinity.  I’ll be all set glass-wise when the R5 Mk2 comes out and will consider it then.
