Wow, you have got to see this just posted video of Fro with the R8. I watched the first few minutes and was completely blown away by the auto focus demonstrated in real world contexts. Amazing!

I watched this video. I was gob smacked by the tenacity of the AF the R8 has and likely the R6/2 also. It was uncanny how the camera could reacquire the subject after it lost it for almost 1-2 seconds.

I grew up sports shooting. Fro is a sports shooter.  He did an amazing job with this, probably the reason why Canon gave him an R8 for this.

I'll try 40 fps when I get mine (I pre-ordered), but more likely to use 20 fps craw

Re: Stunning AF demo of the R8 by the Fro

By chance this video appeared on my YouTube home screen and I was completely mind-blown as to how well the camera tracked the players. I am intrigued to know how much rolling shutter there is when shooting full electronic, and how it compares to the R7, as both of these cameras look incredibly good and I would be quite happy taking either of them out for shooting birds and BIF, just as long as the rolling shutter is not too significant.

Kind regards,

Evan

In every video he posts he shows how he uses Expansion AF to focus in on the subject he wants and then flips back to Eye AF.

The R8 should allow eye-AF in all modes, so I think it's not really Jared flipping back, but the camera.

HI Evan,

He talks a lot about rolling shutter a little later on in the video. He says it's very good.

I think it's the 'whole area AF setting' in the manual: Whole Area Tracking Servo AF

Not a surprise because it has the R6Mii focusing system.

The kind of battery the R8 has to use is what sort of cripples it for professional (sports) work, considering the absence of IBIS can partially be mitigated by lenses with IS.

The R8 is meant to be an entry level camera and not one used by professionals.  Maybe for use as a backup camera at best.  I think he said he got around 1,100 shots from one battery and had half capacity showing on the meter when shooting the basketball game.  Battery life seemed to be not bad at all.

he said on the basketball, he was at 1600 shots on one battery with 1/2 battery life remaining at end of game

On Lacross it was 29 degrees out and he almost got through one game on one battery.

In the comments he says the R8 AF is better than the Z9

He uses words like fantastic, insane, mind blowing AF, unbelievable camera

I like the way he tap, tap,...to switch eyes

He says IBIS makes no difference in sports - he was shooting ss 1/3200

ie, once you get above ss 1/200 for action, IBIS ain't going to help you

he says pros will carry as a backup - I'd say it is small enough they'll even carry two of these as their second and third camera

he got 1600 shots in the basketball game and still had 1/2 a battery -- the camera will be a fine backup

for long videos greater than an hour, it might be more of an issue

work, considering the absence of IBIS can partially be mitigated by lenses with IS.

sports above ss 1/200, IBIS ain't going to help -- well maybe in a bit in panning

How would it change from Expansion AF to all All points without intervention.

That's amazing! I like Fro and loved his initial review of the R6MKII. It helped me decide to buy it.

Important point of perspective   He was shooting 40 fps bursts and not messing with settings at all really.  Experience will be very different if one is adjusting settings consistently, taking single captures, adjusting again, walking around with the camera on standby, etc.

Not saying the battery life will be bad   I’ve happily used an RP for three years (same battery) and only had to go to the back up a handful of times.  But 1,600 picture day on a long hike will be very different than bursts shooting a ball game for an hour or so.

I’m sure you know that, but some might read this and say,”I only got 200 pictures and my battery died.  What the deal?”

I’m set up this way as well. When I press the shutter half way the entire AF area is active. If I can’t get the subject I want info I press a BFF to activate a non eye AF mode. My preference is single point AF.

I picked this method up watching his R3 video shootout. I may be missing something but it has been very effective for me. I override eye AF to get my subject in focus first then I flip to Eye AF.

I’d be interested in a new technique. I’m not getting how Expansion AF flips to full Eye AF by just keeping the shutter half pressed.

I'm curious as well, I only have an 'old' R5, which lacks the fancy new AF features of the R3/R7/R10/R8/R50/R6II.

On my R5 I get text in the EVF when I enable/disable eye-AF, do you get the same on your R7?
