I remember there was development going on for the M100 (latest camera with support as far as I know) but it was very early in the process. I don't remember how much progress was made.

Is the Digic 8 image processor a big roadblock for development?

Part of me wishes camera hardware and software was "open" like Android with custom roms.

Very unlikely. There are only very few active devs now (maybe 3 or 3.5) and we still don't know much about D6+ and newer cameras.

I am skeptical about this. Little motivation. Modern cameras have added a lot of features that were missing at the start of the M line. There is also a technical side, after the original M, Canon changed the firmware (I took powershot as a basis).
