Fred Miranda's buy/sell forum is insanely active, I'd check it out and post it there. That said they are a little protectionist, so expect to be a bit active to get top dollar or interest.

How are they protectionist? Can you clarify?

Well, I almost always end up selling stuff the easiest, most fool proof way, which I'm sure is part of the reason I never get top dollar. That said, KEH is offering me a pretty fair amount, so I think I will end up doing it that way.

You should be able to easily beat the KEH price by several hundred dollars if you put an ad on Craigslist, if you leave in a reasonably populated area.

Craigslist these days requires a high tolerance for BS and a keen ability to sift through all the scams and bots to get to the occasional sincere inquiry. And the knowledge that they’re going to bring just the cash they want to spend and try to talk you down when they get there.

So then you have to be willing to walk away and try again. After a couple trips to a “neutral site” so scammers don’t know where you live, that gets old.

Craiglist is okay, but like I mentioned before I've had lots of luck right here on dpreview buy and sell forum. Maybe I was lucky but I got very nice curteous buyers and they paid through Paypal and covered the Paypal fee.

Personally, I’m terrified of mailing something worth thousands to someone I’ve never even met, but I know that people do it all the time.

That's where insurance comes in. Even selling to MPB or KEH, I always make sure to insure for the full amount !

How does it work and what is insured?
If you mail me a defective or broken camera, or a brick, am I insured?
If you mail me a perfectly good camera and I claim it’s broken, who is insured?

If you mail the camera and I don’t send payment, are you insured?

If you don’t mail the camera and I do send payment; am I insured?

It all seems dependent upon a lot of trust and I don’t know what’s covered and what isn’t. That’s why I prefer a face to face cash transaction in public.

Pretty sure insured just means it’ll get there.  And since you can take pictures when it’s sent, and FedEx takes a picture of intact packaging when it arrives, any dispute over condition is between you and the buyer.

But if it never shows up, then insurance kicks in based on the value you insure it for.

I’m not worried about shipping insurance. I’m worried about getting ripped off.

Check MBP. Offered $555 for my RP. They cover shipping (insured) to their location. I’ve heard good things about them coming in at their quote unless there’s an obvious misrepresentation of what you’re selling. I’ll post again if they counter way low once they’ve received it. They were $150 more than my local shop and nearly $200 more than B&H. They’re in line with what eBay is selling used less eBay’s 20% commission. So it seems they’re looking to profit what eBay charges on fees essentially. Seems reasonable.

My local shop sells used on eBay, so they basically took MBP’s price and knocked off their expected margin. Which seems fair to them, but since I can do better elsewhere, it wasn’t worth it to me.

Per FedEx tracking, MPB has my camera now.  Delivered and signed for.  I’ve read varying reports of how long it takes to inspect and confirm payment.  I’ll update accordingly.

...like new, what would you ask for it ???

KEH is offering $2500... and honestly, I'm surprised its that much. Selling something used for 64% would be like an all time record for me.

Another question about selling a used camera.... On eBay, or a private sale, how do you protect yourself from having the buyer come back and say they had a problem... or they don't want it now ? .....and you already spent the money on something else ?

You sell it to KEH, or B&H, or MPB.com.

Hi Chris,

What does "like new" mean in terms of number of mechanical shutter clicks? Total number (mechanical plus electronic)? And how old is it? Did KEH and B&H ask you about these details?

Thanks,
Rudy

Hey Rudy, basically just scratch free. I've even had a screen protector on it since day one, and do not use the articulating screen, so that is super tight. As far as shutter count, probably pretty low, as for the first several months I had it, I used strictly ES. So I dunno... maybe 30K ? From what I hear, their is no way to count electronic shutter clicks, and even if their were, that wouldn't add any additional wear to the camera. That racked up a LOT of shots quickly... which one reason I went back to mechanical. But after using my R7 for a month in ES, on the lowest sound setting, my R5 MS is just annoying

I never thought the R5 to have an annoying sound. Coming from Nikon I feel it is so soft and subtle.

To be quite honest, not only did it never bother me before, but when out shooting with it, I've had several photographers near me say, "Wow ! That's a really quiet shutter" ! At which point Id stop to think about it, and be like, "Yea, its not too bad....." Its only since I've been using my R7 in the ES mode, with the lowest volume setting, that it now seems kind of loud, and annoying. But this is still better than dead silent in the ES mode, and trying to pay attention to the thin little flickering frame around the image in the viewfinder. Neither option is optimal IMPO.

Do you actually pay attention to the "thin little flickering frame" or do you just note it's there and go on?  You're not actually trying to count shots, right?

All I want to know is that's the shutter is going. I don't care to know the number of shots taken in a burst, so having the sound at all is annoying to me.

Definitely don't care about the exact number of shots, but it's easier for me to know I'm actually taking shots with some sound, vs. just the little flickering border.

Re: If you were selling your R5...

Really hard to sell the Sigma 150-600 c. The offers I got from B&H, KEH and MPB were very low. I finally sold mine on a local classified site.  Took awhile. Over the last two years I have sold and traded several times with MPB.  I  always got offers from B&H and KEH,  but the offers from MPB were always significantly better.  They always honored their quotes and one time paid more than their quote.

MPB evaluated and is paying at their quoted amount.  Should be deposited in a couple days.   Kind of decent quote as I’m getting what Canon was selling them for as refurbished around the holidays.
