If you were selling your R5...

...like new, what would you ask for it ???

KEH is offering $2500... and honestly, I'm surprised its that much. Selling something used for 64% would be like an all time record for me.

Another question about selling a used camera.... On eBay, or a private sale, how do you protect yourself from having the buyer come back and say they had a problem... or they don't want it now ? .....and you already spent the money on something else ?

Two other suggestions. See what B&H will offer and also try listing it on Craigslist. Craigslist would be the best because there is no selling fee whereas ebay charges around 12%. One last thought, list it right on Dpreview in their For Sale and Wanted forum. I have sold several items in that section and must say I got the best deals selling on Dpreview. Check to see how long the person was a member and look at some of their post to get a sense about them. Good luck!

I definitely avoid eBay for exactly the reason you mention. Happened to me twice where the buyer tried to significantly renegotiate the price.

if possible do as a trade in as you may get a discount too.

Hi Chris,

What does "like new" mean in terms of number of mechanical shutter clicks? Total number (mechanical plus electronic)? And how old is it? Did KEH and B&H ask you about these details?

Thanks,
Rudy

Try posting it on this site in the Buy Sell forum.  You would probably get more than KEH.  KEH is good but if you can find your own buyer here, you will most likely do better.

Hey Rudy, basically just scratch free. I've even had a screen protector on it since day one, and do not use the articulating screen, so that is super tight. As far as shutter count, probably pretty low, as for the first several months I had it, I used strictly ES. So I dunno... maybe 30K ? From what I hear, their is no way to count electronic shutter clicks, and even if their were, that wouldn't add any additional wear to the camera. That racked up a LOT of shots quickly... which one reason I went back to mechanical. But after using my R7 for a month in ES, on the lowest sound setting, my R5 MS is just annoying

Thank you. Yes, I might. But I don't want to be hasty. I want to at least wait for the new R5 firmware update, which hopefully will add sound in the ES mode....

I never thought the R5 to have an annoying sound.  Coming from Nikon I feel it is so soft and subtle.

Craigslist

Look up the price that KEH offers to buy the camera, and the price they sell that camera for. Put it on Craigslist at a price in-between. Bear in mind that KEH does include a warranty.  You aren’t going to warranty the camera. You sell as-is. Buyer inspects in person and that’s that.  Include a lot of photos showing the condition and included accessories.

Meet at a public location. Starbucks is best. Cash only, inside the Starbucks.

When you first post the ad, you’ll immediately get an offer or two. Those are bots. Expect that. It will take time to find a serious interested buyer. I’ve been through this many times. It will work.

To be quite honest, not only did it never bother me before, but when out shooting with it, I've had several photographers near me say, "Wow ! That's a really quiet shutter" ! At which point Id stop to think about it, and be like, "Yea, its not too bad....." Its only since I've been using my R7 in the ES mode, with the lowest volume setting, that it now seems kind of loud, and annoying. But this is still better than dead silent in the ES mode, and trying to pay attention to the thin little flickering frame around the image in the viewfinder. Neither option is optimal IMPO.

Thanks Chris.

I'm trying to get some idea of how the price of a used R5 is determined by sellers and buyers. Since the number of electronic shutter clicks don't seem to matter a lot, is it strictly the number of mechanical shutter clicks, plus the age and the cosmetic appearance that determine the price?

Did KEH and B&H give you any idea of why they gave you the prices they did? I'm asking because I'm trying to determine the value of my own R5.

Thanks,
Rudy

Oh, and I forgot to say, but my camera is about 14 months old.

You go to KEH, look at the price they will pay you for the camera in its condition, look at the price they sell it for, and price yours in-between, because KEH adds a warranty which you definitely do not want to offer.

Just because KEH says they will buy it for $2500 doesn't mean that they will actually pay that much.  After you send it to them, at your expense, they will inspect it and come back to you with an actual price.  It may be quite a bit lower that $2500.  Sometimes their stated prices are just come-ons.

Re: If you were selling your R5...

Check MBP. Offered $555 for my RP. They cover shipping (insured) to their location. I’ve heard good things about them coming in at their quote unless there’s an obvious misrepresentation of what you’re selling. I’ll post again if they counter way low once they’ve received it. They were $150 more than my local shop and nearly $200 more than B&H. They’re in line with what eBay is selling used less eBay’s 20% commission. So it seems they’re looking to profit what eBay charges on fees essentially. Seems reasonable.

My local shop sells used on eBay, so they basically took MBP’s price and knocked off their expected margin.  Which seems fair to them, but since I can do better elsewhere, it wasn’t worth it to me.

Makes me want to jump on the KEH offer !

Thing about KEH's offer, they may downgrade YOUR assessment of the camera.  You may think your camera looks "Like New", but KEH may call it Excellent after they look at it.  They may be the pickiest site out there when it comes to the grading system.  Like new better look like it did the moment you pulled it out of the box.  Do you have even the tinest brassing or rub mark on the body from handling it?  A nick the size of a pinhead on the bottom from setting the camera down?  If so, it ain't Like New in their view any more.

I've bought stuff from KEH in Bargain condition before and when I got it was like "holy smokes!  This thing is in great shape!".  Based on this, I've seen plenty of private sale adds listing their gear as Like New or Mint and I see it and go "yeaaaaah....that would be a bargain KEH lens all day".

Not trying to dissuade you on their deal, just saying be prepared for them to give it a lower rating and a lower price.

Try MPB too for an offer.  I always cross shop MPB and KEH if I'm selling gear.  I will say the hassle-free experience of trading gear to these places is often worth the peace of mind compared to dealing with haggling and potential issues with sellers for the extra bit of $$ a private sale can net you.  Never know how a deal can go from smooth to sideways.  That said, I've had mostly positive experience (including selling a R5) with the better private sale camera forums.

Honestly, for my "cheaper gear" sales, I prefer to trade in to MPB or KEH.  For example, if I have an older lens I can sell for $400 including shipping in a private sale, those two sites may give me $300 on trade in.  Seems like a big hit, but they will pay for the shipping and there are no Paypal or other transaction fees.  I basically get $300 straight in my pocket with no hassle.  The extra $50 or so I might make on a private sale after shipping and fees just isn't worth my time and hassle.
