Which SDCard for the R8?

Hi

Which SDCard brand & size will you recommend for the R8?

As an hobbyist, I am more interested in photography than video, I will do video very occasionnaly.

What would be the reasonnable size for an SDCard, I saw that UHS-ii cards seems the way to go.

From my first research on the subject and past experience with my 7D (I use a CF 32Go), I saw this card:

Kingston Canvas React Plus Carte SD 64 Go | SDXC UHS-II | 300R/260W U3 V90 (75$cad)

Or maybe the same in 128 Go (160$cad)

Since the R8 have only one card slot, would you recommend ×1 128Go card or ×2 64Gb cards?

Thanks for your feedback

Choosing 64 Go vs 128 Go is "budget' related. It also depends on how many pictures you expect to take without changing cards. If you never go beyond a 1000 per session, 64 is large enough.

I am not sure you need a V90 for the R8. Looks expensive and probably an overkill. V60 should be fast enough. Unless you shoot at 40 shot burst all the time.

When I got the R7, I started with 64GB V90 UHS-II cards. After a year, I found that I wasn't shooting anything that needed V90 speeds. When I do shoot video, it's almost always Full HD 59.94 fps. Here's the chart for the R8, and there is no video mode that requires anything above V60.

https://cam.start.canon/en/C013/manual/html/UG-10_Reference_0100.html#Reference_0100_2-2

When I got the R6, I looked at the SD specs for both cameras and decided that (for me) higher capacity and price was more important than raw card speed. So I got a set of four Samsung EVO 256GB V30 UHS-I cards and have been very happy, especially with the price to performance ratio.

Edit: I should have noted that I shoot WAY more photos than video, and I don't need the better maximum burst rate of a UHS-II card (scroll up in the SD chart for data on photo quality/max shots).

If you don't plan to use the high speed modes very much, good old UHS-I cards like the Sandisk Extreme Pro work great. These cards are proven, reliable, and are dirt cheap now and still give pretty good speed (100 MB/s write). I've bought a couple of 64GB versions for around $12-13 each. Again, if you don't use the burst mode very often, I'd say save your money and just get these. Pick your size; 64 and 128GB are very well priced.

They'll still handle using burst mode sporadically, but aren't quite fast enough for dedicated sports and wildlife. Those who go out and come home with 5000 images or more in a few hours will need faster.

V60 cards are good price/performance ratio now, and should handle the R8 buffer pretty well. Possibly not fast enough to handle a "few thousand frames per hour" type shooting, but for most uses should be sufficient. I've got a Lexar UHS-II 1800X V60 card for my R6II and have been happy with it. I haven't stress tested the buffer in the real world yet, but some quick test at home firing off 40FPS showed it cleared pretty quickly. I'll likely never use the 20/40 fps modes so I don't expect any bottle necks for my needs.

Don't need to go overboard

For stills shooting and regular casual video use, a good UHS Speed Class 3 card will do great. And those are now dirt cheap. For example, Sandisk Extreme Pro 200MB/s 64GB card is at Adorama for US$15.

The only thing that may not be fast enough for would be 10-bit color High fps video, either 4k60 or 1080p180. But you could do high bitrate in 8-bit color, or regular fps video in 10-bit color with that $15 card.

If you wanted to be sure you could do all the video settings on your camera, you'd need a V60 rated card. But those don't have to cost a fortune. Lexar 64Gb V60 card is only US$25 right now.

I would rather get 2-3 cards so I can have a backup card with me at all times. 2x64GB will be a great starting point.

Thanks a lot for your feedback.

I will go with
×1 Kingston Canvas React Plus 64 Go and
×1 UHS-i with high capacity (128 or 256)

We will see how it will go.

+1 for the Sony Tough M Series.  Fast.  Bulletproof.  All the speed you need (150 MB/s write), but without the overkill and unneeded expense of the (also excellent) Sony Tough G Series.  I have tons of the Sandisk Extreme Pro (UHS I and II), and the Sonys have been just as reliable.

Also recommend the blazing fast $28 Sony MRW-S1 reader to match.

Hi

I will go with
×1 Kingston Canvas React Plus 64 Go and
×1 UHS-i with high capacity (128 or 256)

In the end I saw a sale with ×1 Kingston Canvas React Plus 128 Go, new for "only" 105,00$cad in a real store.

Since the 64 Go version cost arround 75$cad, I quickly bought the 128 Go

Money aside, I like Sandisk and Delkin Black, both UHS II. I have experience with sandisk customer service and they took care of me when I had a problem. Delkin Black has been flawless and feels so much more sturdy than the standard SD cards. As a hobbyist I would get 64gb cards, shooting raw that is still a huge card if you're not shooting video. 128gb is my smallest card but I never have come close to using half of it but by design, memory cards will last longer the larger they are. They have an onboard controller that writes to different sectors of the disk to help minimize wear. Each sector or cell has a finite write cycles so the more you have, the less a single cell will written too. So say you shoot 14gb of images regularly on a 16gb card. That means pretty much the whole card has been written too. The next shoot you do the same, again another write cycle on the whole card. Now put in a 64GB card and shooting the same, you will only write to about 1/4 of the card. So in theory you would have 4 shoots before the whole card has been written to once. So the card should last you 4 times longer than the smaller card.

Not knowing your budget I would get at least 2 cards but dont skimp on going for the cheapest. Def stay away from Amazon and eBay when buying cards, so many scammers on counterfeit cards. It's probable you will at sometime have a card failure, you dont want to be left on vacation locked out of taking photos because you have a single card and that one got corrupted. If your want a backup just for emergencies, buy one fast card and one USD I for a backup. that will save some money if money is tight.

Very interesting, I didn't know

I end up buying this card :

Kingston Canvas React Plus Carte SD 128 Go | SDXC UHS-II | 300R/260W U3 V90

I intended to buy the 64 Go version as primary and a UHS-I as backup, but I saw the 128 Go for 105$cad (vs. 75$cad for the 64 Go) in a real store.

I will see for a cheap back-up (but with a known brand)

Thanks

+1 I get 90 minutes of video per LP-E17 battery in my M6ii.  Not an issue at all.    I’d expect at least the same from the R8.
