New Canon Lens Release

BH is showing this new Canon lens: Canon RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens (Canon RF)

I'm curious what its use would be vs the 24-105 STM. Smaller and a few ounces lighter at the expense of significant more reach. I haven't seen any review as of yet so no telling its IQ at this point, hopefully better than the 15-30.

Re: New Canon Lens Release

This is a new lens that is going to be released with the R8. The R8 has the same form as the RP and Canon is making the RF 24-50mm its kit lens option. This lens on the R8 makes for a very small, lightweight package and better suites its size. The RF 24-105mm STM is seen as an affordable, small, lightweight kit lens for larger bodies like the R, R6 and R5.  The RF 24-50mm STM can also be purchased on its own.

Super cheap kit lens to get a buyer started with something until they can afford new lenses.

That plus the R8 make a very light full frame walk around.

The R did it correct at the beginning with the 24-105 f/4 being the kit lens. The STM is a joke for a body like the R5 or R6 II. 4000$ camera, "100$" lens. Nikon has more decency with the 24-70 f/4 or 24-120 f/4 being the kit lens for the higher end bodies.

As a result the Nikon Z 24-70 f/4 can be bought for like 300-400$ in mint condition, Canon probably wanted to prevent that for the 24-105 f/4, which is now selling for 1300$, which is actually a bit crazy. The RF 24-50 will be even cheaper than the 24-105 STM, but some people just like to shoot dark, cheap lenses on a high end fullframe body instead of buying a more suited system (e.g. Fuji APS-C, R7, ..).

I don't see anything wrong with providing consumer options.  The 24-105 f4 is the only kit lens for the R5 where as the R6/R6II can be had as a kit with either the 24-105 f4 or 24-105 f4-7.1 (source Canon Mirrorless Cameras: EOS | Canon U.S.A, Inc.)

Ah, I am actually glad that the R5 is not being bundled with the STM, unlike MikeJ mentioned.

It is likely extremely cheap to manufacture. Canon can then set an imaginary price of $299, knowing that nobody will actually pay that. But they can run promos and charge $100 for it while bundling it with an R8, or even give it away for free during Black Friday or similar. Then people think they've made a good deal. It will likely be very sharp and take decently beautiful pictures. But it has been deliberately constricted in its usefulness so as to get people to come back and buy more lenses (where the big money is in).

Re: New Canon Lens Release

I personally would rather have the range of the 24 - 105 ( I have both the stm and the L version of this lens) but I don't mind a slightly larger lens.

For somebody wanting a very small walk around package it's a good idea.

I generally go for the RF L lenses on my canon body, and pro glass on my m43 gear.  But I wouldn't fault anybody for whatever choice of lens they want to use, or can afford, on their RF body.

It seems a good fit for the R8.  The description mentions vloggers.  Also, the selfie crowd wanting to gain followers with better quality shots by getting the R8 and this lens?

I was wondering if the increasing age of ILC photographers means this is the lens to take out as an everyday walk about lens that is light enough for those aged arms.  Easy to get $299 out of the elderly for new stylish glass.

Soon, a Sony owner will chime in to say, while it is light weight (Sony's top criteria), it's AF is SLOOOOW.

Very light.  Seems to be aimed at the trend for small, cute, and lighter weight.

I don't see where there is anything to like or not like about the R5 being bundled with 24-105mm STM or 24-50mm STM. One can equip it with both lenses and they each serve a purpose on any camera they are mounted on.

I bought my R6 MK1 (body only) and separately the RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM lens. More than happy with it. Yet I need to see a Canon lens that does not produce sharp pictures.

I'm curious what its use would be vs the 24-105 STM. Smaller and a few ounces lighter at the expense of significant more reach. I haven't seen any review as of yet so no telling its IQ at this point, hopefully better than the 15-30.

I preordered the R8+24-50 kit because I want something smaller than my R5 to take with me on family outings. The 24-105
would move it to the ‘needs a bag’ category, while the 24-50 would keep it in the ‘fits in coat pocket’ category.

If you want reviews, check youtube, there are a few hands-on previews from the usual suspects, including Gordon from Cameralabs.

There are plenty of times when a cheap lens can come in handy no matter what body it is being used on. Always good to have options available.

It's got the useful (for me) part of a 24-70mm lens' range for a third of the weight of an EF 24-70mm f/4 + adapter or a quarter of the weight of an RF 24-70mm. Not to mention the size difference for a walkabout lens. I went for a 24-105mm over a 24-70mm for the added benefit of the 100mm focal length I love; but that lens is tempting me either in a white box in a few months time or in a kit when I replace my R with an R5 II or III.

Canon's MTF diagrams

RF 50mm/1.8

This is at f/1.8, it will almost certainly be better at f/6.3 than the zoom.

This can be meant as a vlogging cam as well, like the Nikon Z30 (APS-C) or Sony A7C. Maybe even a slap in the face of Sony as the A7C is more expensive, although having IBIS which the R8 has not.
But f/6.3 @ 50mm is rather dark.

The usefulness of IBIS dissipates when using lenses with IS.  A lot of videographers don't like using IBIS because it creates a warping effect at the edges and corners of the frame.  Especially regarding Canon cameras.

The trend with Canon made RF lenses is that they are darker, in general.  Even some of the RF L lenses are this way.  The tradeoff is they are small, lightweight and have very good IQ when there is enough light.  Also, the newer sensors perform well at higher ISOs and processing software can work miracles in removing noise so this helps when using these newer, darker lenses.

I was thinking along the same lines when I placed my pre -order for the R8/RF 24-50 kit. I had the RP some time ago before I switched to a R5 (along with some of the L lenses), but now I sometimes miss the small size and manageability of the RP... so the R8 (with its state-of-the-art AF) and the kit lens (or the RF 35) should fit the bill.

Re: New Canon Lens Release

Thank you all for your thoughts on this lens.

It would appear that it is targeted at uses (vlogging, street, etc) which I don't do. I would (well already have) choose the extra reach for versatility of the 24-105. I would look at shorter lengths like a 15-30 ( or even a good RF version of the 17-40) for wide shooting of landscape/cityscape.

And, Koenkooi, you have larger pockets that I do, as I travel 365 and seldom need my sweatshirt (oh, I'll be darned! It does have handwarmer pockets).

Cheers!
