R6 Battery Life?

Hello, all!

I'm looking into building a whole new kit around an R6. I've never shot mirrorless and have heard they can be harsh on batteries compared to DSLR.

How many batteries would you want on hand for 4-8 hour days of wildlife shooting? I know battery life can be highly variable, but just wondering what you all carry in the field.

I don't shoot much video. I shoot pretty low bursts. I use the viewfinder, and try to run a lot of power-saving settings.

Thank you!

I have found battery life to be far batter than anticipated.  It was a pleasant surprise.

I generally shoot in bursts and I still get plenty of use before I have to switch to a new battery.

Even the Neewer batteries I use as backup are long lasting.

I didn't answer your question.  You will probably get away with just one, but no more than two.

I shoot with the battery grip for ergonomics and battery life.  I've shot baseball double-headers and I think it only dropped to three bars.  The grip was $300 well spent.  Battery life is good for stills but keep in mind there are several settings, especially related to the EVF, that impact battery life.  I find ECO mode is good quality and extends battery life.

Someone else will need to weigh in on video.

I also have a BG-R10 grip on the R6 MK1 with two batteries on-board. I mainly do landscapes and cityscapes and never returned home after shooting 250-300- pictures with the batteries being lower than 60-65%. You may also turn the camera to Airplane mode, its turns off wifi and bluetooth wich can also be an energy hog.

I get by full days of shooting with 2 batteries, and I have a 20000mah battery to charge the camera over USB C if I ever need to (havent needed to on my R6, my RP all the time).

If you are sitting in one place, and have a battery with 45w type C output, you can power the camera directly while it on, and charge the battery inside while its off.

When i am somewhere trying to shoot some ”wildlife” the battery really lasts long… in theory 1 battery/day is enough if you are not making videos.

Anyway, on a trip to Switzerland one battery lasted about one day. Long walks. My 5DMkIV usually consumed much less. Like 500 shots with R6 and 1100 with 5D/ one full battery

When i go out for a day i usually have 2 spare batteries  just to be sure. Very often i need one, especially when it is colder. I have never really needed 3 batteries /day
