Which Ultra Wide angle for Fuji?

Currently I have XF 14mm and I feel it's not wide enough for my architectural shots.. I'm mostly shooting Hindu temples and forts . Also some religious festivals where i want to exaggerate things.
I also have XF 23mm which i use for general purpose.

I will be selling XF 14mm and planning to buy one of the below ultra wide angle lens.
So far I heard Laowa is lighter and NiSI is better quality.  Is that true? I would prefer lightweight If that does not degrade quality much.
New Tamron also seems to be light weight. While having zoom is good I will be shooting at 11mm most of the time any way.  How it will compare with above primes?  I don't want to compromise in Wide end IQ and light weight.
Please suggest me one.

I would probably wait a bit. Fujifilm has announced development of a quite compact 8mm f/3.5, that will be released this year. Hopefully at the next X-Summit in April.

Hi,

Why sell the 14mm - a good lens for architectural uses -  rather than keep both your 14mm and 23mm and ADD a wider lens?  Otherwise your step from 9mm to 23mm will be huge.  You will surely encounter situations where you will need something between the two?

Two important lenses missing in your list.

  • Viltrox 13/1.4, gets many good opinions, I have it, too, and am very happy
  • Fujifilm XF 8/3.5, will be announced soon

Fujifilm wide angle zoom lenses are also missing. At least the XF 8-16.

Martin

I'm not going to sell immediately. I will see and will sell only if I'm sure I don't need that focal length. I also have an idea to get 16mm if I feel that gap

It's a spectacular lens. But I need wider considering I already gave 14mm.

  • Fujifilm XF 8/3.5, will be announced soon

It's very interesting. But I have used 9mm and fine with it. But scared to go even wider without testing it first. Also f/3.5 need to be released first too see how sharp it is wide open.

Fujifilm wide angle zoom lenses are also missing. At least the XF 8-16.

Not many choice. It's heavy for me

For wide shots of architecture i suppose the xf 10-24 could do a good job as well. The OIS is a nice benefit if your can't use a tripod.

The xf 8-16 is heavy but it's an amazing lens.

If you go for a zoom, you may be able to carry just the zoom or the zoom and one very light prime. The resulting weight can be about the same as multiple primes and more convenient. The XF 10-24 f4 is another option and while some find it soft in the corners, it might not matter for your applications and/or at the apertures you use. If you can rent, borrow or purchase with an option to return I suggest you try both zooms. Waiting for an anticipated lens release could leave you waiting for a long time and there is no guarantee we will ever see the new lens.

I'm a new owner of the Fuji 10-24 and I'm struck by how good and useful it is in a fairly small package.  At f5.6 I'm hard pressed to see a difference from the 14/2.8, which I will be selling.

I am an historic buildings Architect and have been shooting buildings in France and the UK for many years, both internally and externally.

Internally, lighting conditions vary enormously, and for adequate DOF I often used a small aperture with the camera mounted on a tripod. The ability to minimize CA is also vital, which was one of the reasons I moved from Pentax to Fuji back in 2015. I bought the XE2 then and soon after, the XM1 for its tilting screen. I also bought the Fuji 10-24 zoom specifically for architectural work.

When mounted and set up on a tripod, and swiveling round to frame different shots, the ability to zoom is incredibly useful.

I never felt the need to go wider than the 10mm, so rather than the primes that you mention, I would simply get the Fuji 10-24 and if you don't have an IBIS body, then the Fuji wins again with its OIS.

You mean 10-24 has the same IQ at f/5.6 similar to XF 14mm shot at f/5.6?

Other question is, Can you tell me about the IQ of 10-24mm when using 10mm wide focal length wide open ie f/4?

I felt i should go wider than my XF 14mm for the exaugurated depth.  I found it's working well with 9mm. I tested it!  I don't think i need wider than that. But i definitely want wider than 11mm to get that effect.

I’ve got the 10-24 as well and it’s a lot smaller than my old, admittedly wider 8-16 Sigma that I bought for my Pentax. It also accepts filters which is nice.

Not any more than saying it seems OK stopped down a bit but I usually want a bit more DoF that you get at f4.  All in all it seems OK.

For me, I'd get the Fuji 10-24 and keep the 14.  I like the flexibility of zooms for wide and telephoto.  (But this is just me, we're all different.  I like the idea of carrying both a zoom and a prime).

Good luck with your decision!

This is what I want to achieve.

Taken by wide angle camera of Samsung galaxy M33 smartphone

Taken by wide angle camera of Samsung galaxy M33 smartphone

The wide angle camera in my mobile is equivalent of 13mm in full frame format.

My XF14mm which has equivalence of 21mm would not bring this drama to my shots. I want drama in my pictures not reality. I'm extremely satisfied with the result coming with my smartphone wide angle lens except the image quality. I had another budget smartphone which also had similar UWA camera with 13mm view. I liked it but not image quality.

I want high quality RAW files in same type of dramatic depiction of things.

XF14 while being excellent lens of it's own does not give this drama. I might still keep XF 14mm after purchasing one of this UWA. But What i need is this drama and able to include all of the scene.

Looks like you should wait for the Fuji 8mm f/3.5.

(Unless you think 10mm would be wide enough, then the Fuji 10-24 might still work and give you some versatility)

Oddly enough that’s precisely how I’ve been using my recently acquired (used) 10-24 today.

The first time I bought one I quickly decided it was too bulky for urban use and I returned it. This time I got it primarily for rural landscapes but it turns out it’s really not that bulky after all (at least once you leave the hood at home). Plus, with the internal zoom meaning I’m not constantly shrinking the lens back to the wide end when I stop shooting, it’s like having a 10 for architecture and a 24 for street both fitted at once.

yES. Just worried that 8mm may be very wide which i can't handle. But yes there couldn't be much different between 12mm and 13.5mm (full frame equivalence.)

(Unless you think 10mm would be wide enough, then the Fuji 10-24 might still work and give you some versatility)

Not much in to that lens. Not just just because it's look large but I will be any way using it on 10mm. So why buy a zoom. Second it's f/4. It has OIS but i might take photos with things moving such as people or moving plant foliage's / stems.
