hornet ?

I found this out in the snow, probably not a good day to emerge from where it'd been overwintering, it recovered in the house on a flower

it might have been snowing today but spring is coming...

Aka a common wasp, or for the USA a Yellowjacket ?

it’s funny how I used to bat them away without looking, a macro lens has changed my attitude to inquisitiveness

Re: hornet ?

Can't identify the species, but like the pics very much. Great detail especially on #1. Thanks for sharing!

Phil

thanks Phil, #1 was where it woke up and started preening

it was rather large for a common wasp (12-17mm), so probably a queen (20mm), apparently the rings /dots on the abdomen help identify, and the anchor/dagger markings on the snout, so thats another new fact for me today

Re: hornet ?

Nice pictures. The facial pattern looks like a common wasp (vespula vulgaris). It must be a young queen as the hive does not survive winter.

Definately not a hornet, most likely vespa crabro in your region, it would be a lot larger and very different in color.

Thanks Robert, I think it was the size that threw me off, and then not thinking, as you say the body colourings are different and I see very few hornets around here, eg this one from a few years ago

There's an excellent guide to social wasps here: https://www.eakringbirds.com/eakringbirds2/insectswaspsidentification.htm

Bear in mind it's geared to the UK - if you are elsewhere, you might have other species, or may be missing some.
