And a few thoughts crossed my mind. Although the grip does not allow "use" of the batteries in the grip, what a perfect place to carry two spares

Also, I'm wondering how hard it would be, and how cleanly it could be done, to transport the juice from those batteries, into the USB port on the camera ?

Oh, the grip also has a spot under the bottom right side to attach a hand strap (which I always use) however, with that hand strap attached, I'm not sure if the grip will be able to swing enough, to allow the battery door to completely open ? It would be even more painful to have to completely remove the grip, every time I had to change the battery. Hmmm. Maybe all the more reason for trying to get juice from the batteries, into the USB port ?

Finally, I've never used the USB port to charge my battery, but if in fact, the grip made that a PITA, I'd probably start using the USB port for charging as much as I could, to minimize the number times I had to actually change the battery.

Your thoughts (only if your in the camp interested in a grip for the R7)

PS, I think it's kind of funny, if you ask a bunch of folks who want a grip, they would probably tell you a BUNCH of folks would like a grip, like the majority of them ! Then, if you ask a bunch of folks who couldn't care less about a grip, they would probably tell you that only like 2% care about a grip, and Canon would have little reason to make one lol I suspect the real answer probably lies somewhere in between

There’s no reason for Canon to make a battery grip.  Why not?  Because they specifically ruled that out by not incorporating the necessary connections.  And I very much doubt you could connect LPE6 type batteries to the USB-C port.  Sorry - but you aren’t the only one disappointed by this.  R7 mk2 maybe?

I disagree. The reason is $

Why not? Because they specifically ruled that out by not incorporating the necessary connections.

Even a non-powered grip would be appreciated by many. Id sure pay $50 for one, especially if allowed the battery to be changed without removal, and had an attachment point for a hand strap.

And I very much doubt you could connect LPE6 type batteries to the USB-C port.

I am almost sure, this could be done. All it would take would be the right connectors.

Sorry - but you aren’t the only one disappointed by this. R7 mk2 maybe?

One company actually says, about a non-powered grip for the R7 > coming soon. The one they make for the R is sweet !

You will see I wrote there’s no reason for Canon to make a *battery* grip. They cannot. They could make an extension grip like the one for the RP.

As for charging or operating your camera via the USB-C port, that requires a power supply rated to provide 9v/3A to the PD protocol. The LP-E6NH battery itself is 7.2v. Don’t know how you’d make that work, it’s not just a matter of connecting it up.

Canon have specifically ruled out a battery grip, you will have to live with that or find another way such as a PD rated USB-C powerbank.

Yea, I know I have heard of folks using a battery pack attached by USB, so I assumed (incorrectly I suppose ?) that the same could be done with the two batteries in the grip....

But since you should mention it, I have a big, brick of a USB power pack... 26,000 mAh I think, that I could easily attach to my tripod.... and I always shoot birds with a tripod. So, if this grip works really well > other than making it a PITA to change the battery, I might very well try this option.

Cool idea powering through the USB-C. It can be done but you need a PD (power Delivery) controller. Not difficult, but you need a circuit board for the PD controller.

A power brick (battery) with USB-C PD already on it would be a "plug-n-go" deal. Using the spare Canon batteries could be done but requires some work.

Yea.... This is the one I really like.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1487060-REG/meike_mk_eosrg_metal_hand_grip_for.html/?ap=y&ap=y&smp=y&smp=y&smpm=ba_f2_lar&lsft=BI%3A5451&gclid=Cj0KCQiAx6ugBhCcARIsAGNmMbjrVWRdnBG7ueNVehvUbZcxTxPGTj6i8UnzVn3etn8XJhuKdW4bW9QaAn37EALw_wcB

It allows for changing the battery, without removal. But right now, its only nade for the R I think this was the company (or anotherr that makes a very similar one) that is promising one for the R7 soon ?
