Can't turn off Live View

Initially I had high hopes, then realised I was taking rubbish photos because the rear LCD was still on...

But you can't turn off live view. The R5 has the option to do this (option 6 in the screen info options), but the R6 does not.

If you want a blank screen you have to turn it off completely, so it won't even work when you flip it out, without changing the settings. Note, even though there is an 'info' button to cycle through screen options, you cannot use this button to turn on/off the rear screen.

Even the R6 II is lacking this simple feature, so neither the R6 nor R6 II will behave like a DSLR unless you make the camera harder to use. Such a shame.

Also, image review is rubbish for some reason. Never looks sharp. All in all, though it has great IBIS and I love the size and weight of it, I still prefer my 5D4.

I love optical viewfinders, so I'd try the R6II if it had the blank screen option. But since it doesn't, the only mirrorless that might work for me is the R3 with the OVF simulation feature, or the as-yet unavailable R5 II.

Strange set of points to advance in justifying an outlier rating. You could simply keep the screen folded closed. And why would you want a mirrorless camera to behave like a DSLR anyway?

Wow, so your "review" gives it 1 star b/c of one feature that doesn't work the way you want it to?

Wait, what???!!!  You were taking rubbish photos because the rear LCD was on? This might be, no, it definitely is, the silliest thing posted on DPR this week (quite a high bar). Either you were using the rear LCD to compose, in which case it would have been difficult for you to know what you were shooting without it on, or you were using the EVF, in which case the rear LCD wasn’t on. Completely nonsensical.

.

Can't start my Tesla with a crank handle

Initially I had high hopes for my new Tesla, but then I realized I was driving like a maniac, crashing into things all over the place, because I couldn't set it up to start with a crank handle at the front, like my good old trusty Model T Ford. 1 star.

Nonsense. Of course you can turn live view off, in at least 3 ways. I’ll leave it to @Goodmeme (nice username!) to work out how. Perhaps start by RTFM.

No need to dignify a good rant with an explanation…

This makes no sense at all. How on earth would the rear lcd being on make you produce rubbish photos?

Also, when you put the camera to your eye the rear lcd turns off unless you have it set to remain on always.

So you purchased a mirrorless camera and you're disappointed that it is different than a dslr?

Also, image review is rubbish for some reason. Never looks sharp. All in all, though it has great IBIS and I love the size and weight of it, I still prefer my 5D4.

Even if it had the blank screen option it still wouldn't have an optical viewfinder, same with the R3.

This is a strange post...

I gave my new Tesla 1 star because it didn't enjoy the premium oats that I always fed my horse....he enjoyed the oats...but not this ungrateful Tesla.

Re: Can't turn off Live View

You can laugh all you want. But Canon could have easily added this option in firmware, when it did so for the R5, in the exact way I am describing.

Instead of clamouring for the correct solution, you are all too busy affirming your camera selection.

Even my little Ricoh GR2 could be made to work without a screen, so you could just look through an optical viewfinder if you want and take pictures without being distracted. I didn't need to cover up the LCD to get the job done, so it was of course able to show image review when I was ready. Ricoh understands photographers the way Leica does, and has managed to get many Leica users on board who appreciate the aesthetics/nice process of such photography.

Of course the R6 is capable, but low scoring reviews can help purchasers and camera development far more than normal ones imo.

How many of you would be inconvenienced if Canon added option 6 to the info screen options? None.

I am not alone in finding this an annoyance. Other photographers are also choosing to close the LCD to get the same result. It's not hard to find others bemoaning the lack of 'option 6' on the camera. Search and you'll see. Or just carry on believing you have a perfect camera.

Frankly, to me a helpful review is one that focuses to the camera overall, goes through its pros and cons in a fairly neutral manner, and if a rating is included, bases it on the overall functionality, reliability and usability rather than hyperfocusing on a single detail. People reading the review can then judge themselves which of the cons may be relevant to them (a person only ever taking single shots won't care much if the burst speed is low, someone photographing mostly action probably does).

A 1-star camera would be something that is extremely sluggish, has poor autofocus, a very poor sensor, so-so build quality and clumsy controls and ergonomics. Not something that generally works well, but that apparently has a feature that some users may find annoying.

1* and 5* reviews can generally be ignored. It might be going too far to say that they tell me more about the reviewer than the subject of the review, but the useful information and constructive criticism generally comes in the middling reviews.

Re: Can't turn off Live View

With respect, I find that you set a very low bar for what is a passable camera.

The reality is that industry and market expectations increase every year.

When seatbelts were introduced, they were an amazing feature. Now car manufacturers are obliged to include seatbelts if they wish to stay in the market. Every year in nearly every market, what was premium becomes obligatory, and manufacturers must innovate to be able to offer premium features.

Regarding cameras, any digital camera from the past 10 years would be deemed magical versus a camera from 100 years ago, therefore saying a one star review camera is only something that can't focus seems a bit sloppy and pointless.

Regardless, I stand by my rating. The R6 is unuseable to me as is, because I would rather use my 5d4. It will be sold and I will lose some money on it. Probably would have kept it if it had 'option 6', while I wait for the R5II to release and /or drop to a price I can afford.

Anyone deciding to take the mick, might consider that R5 users managed to get this added in firmware, and that there is no reason it shouldn't be ported to the R6 as an option.

My bar was in comparison to other roughly contemporary cameras. I find it hard to believe R6 is overall massively worse than the average contemporary cameras in the aspects I mentioned.

Edit: I can believe the live view's behaviour may genuinely make the camera a poor match for you, although this doesn't seem to be a common complaint. Still, a more realistic take would be to comment about its other cons and pros too and just leave it up to the reader to judge what applies to them personally.

But I think we're looking at this from a quite different points of view as far as rating things goes. So it's probably best to just say I wish you'll eventually find a successor to the 5D mk IV (which is a fine camera in its own right) that works like a charm for your needs!

I was completely unaware that mobs were forming to demand this particular R5 feature be added to the R6. I was also unaware that the R5 even has the feature, so I don’t use it. I usually leave the screen folded closed, just like I did on my dslrs. And I do not find that annoying.  If and when I want to review images in the field, and only if the viewfinder isn’t good enough for a quick look, then I open the screen, look, and close the screen again. Keeps it cleaner and safer. As for Leica, I will forbear from satirical commentary, but there was a funny YouTube video on the topic “if cameras were people”,
