Sigma Contemporary 100-400 vs 150-600 for EFM use?
1

I have a EFM system [M50mk ii] and am looking for a longer zoom that I can use for both wildlife and sports. I also have a couple of older crop sensor DSLR bodies (60D and SL-1), but my longest lenses are:

- Tamton 70-300 f/4-5.6 A005 DI SP

- Sigma 18-250 f/3.5-6.3 DC HSM OS (love this lens)

- Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 IS USM L

i have a EF-EFM mount adapter and am thinking about getting one of these two lenses:

- Sigma 150-600mm 5-6.3 Contemporary DG OS HSM Lens for Canon

- Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary Lens for Canon EF

My budget is under $1000.

I read a number of reviews. The lens needs to have stabilization in the lens, as I have a essential tremor in my hand (both of these do I believe), although I will most likely use a tripod or mount of some kind whenever possible.

Obviously the 600 has a longer reach, but there seems a significant weight difference 2.55 vs 4.03 lbs.

Anyone with experience with both of the lenses on APS-C and even on EFM, and have any advice/thoughts to offer?

Thanks in advance.

Both are decent lenses and are do-able on an M body (with the right technique).  I haven’t owned either, but have friends who do.  That 150-600 is pretty hefty, but would be fine on a tripod (no fun on the trail tho).  The 100-400 would be much more comfortable handheld.

I have used the Canon EF 100-400ii (+/- 1.4x iii) pretty extensively on the M6ii.  Really like the 400mm range on crop.

I’m not sure how the M50ii performs with a big telephoto.  Others here could help with that.  Personally I’d gravitate toward the Sigma 100-400 vs the big boy.  Depends if you need that extra bit of reach tho.

Good luck!

I would not invest in m at this point

in your case, maybe sell what you have

for length

R10 + Rf 18-150 kit then add RF 100-400 + RF 1.4 ext after you save up or sell out

Look out for pulsing on Sigma EF tele zooms on RF mount. The 100-400 sigma of course though will work on RF and EFM - so that's OK if it does not pulse.  I tried the sigma 100-400 on the R10 and it seemed to work OK.

I'd stay clear of the RF 100-400 plus 1.4X TC - f/11 is too dark plus Duade Paton tested this combination and found AF not great - which must be linked to f/11 as otherwise the R10 is a star performer AF wise.

Those Sigma lenses are EF mount, so an adapter is needed for M mount. (Therefore the lenses are not orphaned when your M-mount camera dies.)

Larry Rexley has a post about using the 150-500mm on an M6 MkII.

I too have (and love) the M50 Mkii and looking to go longer for sports.

I think I would agree with R2D2's advise and go for the 100-400. As an EF-mount lens it's also future-proof if you decide to switch to the RF/RF-S format any time soon. Please share your experiences if you decide to buy.

I don't have experience with the 150-600mm. I do have experience with using the 100-400mm contemporary on my M6II.  The stabilization is good but not great. I'm sorry having to say it, but It's not the best lens to cope with your tremor I'm afraid. A tripod will solve the issue, but the lens does not come with a tripod foot. The autofocus is o.k., but I wouldn't buy it for birding, running dogs, sports, etc. At f/7.1 & 400mm the IQ is very good. For the weight and price you're getting a whole lot of reach with great IQ. I also like you can zoom the lens by turning, but also by push and pull, so you're very quick at 400mm after it was stored in the bag.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks everyone for your input! I really do appreciate it!

I decided to order the Sigma 100-400 Contemporary and give it a try. The weight is closer to what I am looking for, and we’ll see how it fits the need. It arrives tomorrow. Will post results as soon I can shoot a bit with it.

Again thanks to everyone for their input.I have the Sigma 100-400 EF lens in hand. I have not had a chance to go out shooting wildlife to check the range, but the sharpness appears pretty good. Below on an M50MKII with Canon EF adapter, 315 mm, 1/1000 sec, f/6.3, ISO 500. I had hoped to get some more of currently blooming spring flowers that I can’t get close enough to for my shorter focal length lenses, but we just had 2 nights below freezing and many have affected by the freeze.

EDIT: corrected photo details
