Number five and "the purple one"

I agree with Jim, the purple one rocks.

Number five has a lot of personality. Of course that "personality" boils down to "imma end you now", but still...

Oh, and I notice we've got a couple of newbies hanging in the room. Care to talk about your technique and your equipment choices for those lovely shots?

The term "mirrorless" is totally obsolete. It's time we call out EVIL for what it is. (Or, if you can't handle "Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens" then Frenchify it and call it "LIVE" for "Lens Interchangeable, Viewfinder Electronic" or "Viseur électronique").

Thank you Jim and Joseph. I used to use a Sony camera with the ninety mm macro. It was heavy to carry around in bushwalks and difficult to manoeuvre in tight spots. I was very happy to move to the Olympus em5 mk 3 with the sixty mm macro. Light and easy to carry and manoeuvre in the middle of vegetation, with some weather protection. I was really happy to find that the supplied flash covered most of the closest focusing area and the in camera stacking operated with kenko extension tubes.

Re: Number five and "the purple one"

I use in camera stacking about a third of the time. Sometimes I use a ring light. Sometimes LEDs mounted on the camera, sometimes an external light, sometimes a flash . Often just sunlight and no stacking. Unfortunately bits of the mk 3 tend to fall off and it is under repair at the moment. I have transferred the 60mm with extension tubes too the em1.3. I really like jumping spiders and have posted a few on this site.

Re: Number five and "the purple one"

I was excited by the prospect of the new OMDS 90mm. But it is big and expensive. I am still waiting to see how much more can be achieved with it than can be got from the 60mm with extension tubes. One more tube would be a bit cheaper and smaller. I know the tubes undermine the weather resistance. If things are really wet I use external protection around the seals. The wasp with the beak is an Australian sand wasp. Not aggressive. The ants are mostly bull ants, myrmecia. Extremely aggressive.

I wish my camera showed the stack,  Its annoying to take the pics to the computer for processing and realise a leg(eg) is missing

hah, I think that covers every scenarios, I also use what I have with me at the time 😀

The bull ants run fast, have good eye sight, chase after you and then sting and bite at the same time. they also never stop moving. Difficult to photograph.

I've heard of Bull Ants, Australia yes? The most dangerous insects on the planet make their home in Australia, so it seems.  If I lived there, I would be afraid to put my shoes on in the morning for fear of what might have made its way in there.

How do you photograph something that is that aggressive?

Thanks for your interest. You have to be quick. Take a picture and move away before the ants reach you. Or move the ants away before they reach you. This can be done by coaxing them onto  moveable surfaces eg sticks and moving the surfaces. This gives a few extra moments. . Or wait till they are moving in one direction towards you and quickly shift your position through 180degrees to take a picture.

Re: some mostly recent macros from NSW

You have a bunch of great shots.

I have never seen that species of dragonfly.  They may not make it to Queensland.

I was really confused by the sand wasp.  The antenna look like a wasp but the mouth is strange for a wasp.  The Sand wasps I have here have mandibles that are easy to see.

It has been a long time since I have found any bulldog ants.  I didn't have a camera then.  Finding some I can photograph is on my bucket list.  They are very scary.

Number five is an ant I haven't seen.  How big is it?
