X-H2S HEIF or JPEG

Waiting for delivery of my X-H2s. Question is should I shoot Raw+HEIF or Raw+JPEG. Specific use case is shooting kids sports activities. On my X-T2 I shoot Raw+JPEG. For weekly games I usually just download JPEG to Lightroom, cull, pick and then share JPEG with other parents. I may process some Raw for very low light images or images of my kids. Is there any reason to switch to HEIF?

I stick with RAW + JPG as HEIF is a proprietary image format not an open one like JPG. Not a fan of closed formats of image file.

Congrats on the new camera!

The Fuji HEIF (as I understand it HEIF =!= HEIF, different manufacturers = different HEIF files) format remains unsupported by Windows, i don’t know if it works on Mac. On a Windows PC you will be able to see only the preview as a very small JPEG but not the full resolution HEIF.

If you use a Windows machine and if you want to share images with others stick to JPEG. For everything else you have your RAF files.

On my T3 I used raw+jpeg (basically never used the jpeg files, considered them as backup), on the T5 i set raw+heif - probably will never use the heif files, but (in theory) they contain more information than jpeg.

I think HEIF needs time to settle and become a clear open standard before it’s safe to use.

I'd agree but it will never become an open standard due to who owns it now...

Hi

HEIF- format is easily handled by the "XN-view MP " - free photo program

that I use on my Windows-pc for quick viewing and simple adjustments to images.

Indeed for further use - else than on your Windows-pc - it needs converting to JPEG,

as even DPreview.com stated when I wanted to upload an image made in HEIF,

as it is not supported even by them on this website.

My issue with HEIF is not even that. Its that as its proprietary there is no guarantee it will remain viable or accessible. JPG is widely adopted and open standard so its safe to use.

Same reason doc, pdf etc... are used and other shonkier file formats aren't.

I may be misremembering, but wasn’t that once the case with PDF and Adobe?

The reason I would shoot JPGs is to make sharing easier. I can pull things from the memory card versus importing into Lightroom, edit, export, etc.

The HEIFs look very weird on my devices. On some it looks like an 8 bit paint file from the 90s. Would not recommend.

Thanks for all the replies. I’ll stick with Raw+jpeg.

You are right it's Adobe's file format but open to use on sensible terms by others hence so many pdf readers and editors and things like save as pdf in MS Word.

Its possible to be owned by a company but available to all. I just can't see apple ever doing that. They are cynically and deliberately obtuse.

Just look at what they have done after being (rightly) forced to USB C standard.
