Fuji XF10

I'm a big fan of prime lens cameras and have owned the Fuji X100S, X100F, Sony RX1, and a couple of others, but have never owned or used the very, very, inexpensive Fuji XF10.

I've heard some terrible things about autofocus reliability, but when I saw one advertised for sale, over at the Fred Miranda forum a couple of days ago, I decided to buy it, out of curiosity, more than anything else.

Anyway, I was wondering if Fuji had done any type of update to help with focus problems, and also wondered what people who might have owned the camera think about it.

From what I've read, image quality is pretty good, once you get past the autofocus issues.

Thanks for any information you might be able to give me.

Firmware updates are here; but there’s nothing of much significance in there.

https://fujifilm-x.com/en-gb/support/download/firmware/cameras/xf10/

Just get out and use it. Image quality is excellent, no worries there. The AF is tolerable in decent light, provided you use a focus area that performs well (I seem to have ended up with a largish single central box). The 2m snapshot mode works well for street, and the 5m mode is a handy hyperfocal when the AF struggles. Auto ISO helps with the reduced aperture sizes in those modes.

Autofocus isn't bad by the standards of contrast detect cameras from 10 years ago, and people made perfectly good photos with those. I personally never use snap focus; just high performance mode, single autofocus point, a bit smaller than default but not the smallest (to increase the odds of having both horizontal and vertical contrast), and no continuous AF. This gets me by just fine. The lens is wonderful, the sensor's wonderful, and I find myself bringing it along so much more easily than my X100. Despite the fact that the X100 is a joy to behold and use, the compact form factor with very comparable IQ from a resolution / noise / DR point of view, and the same jpeg colors that I love, have made the XF10 my primary (and pretty much only) dedicated camera since the day I bought it.

If the X70 had USB charging I might've bought that for the control layout and tilt screen with a minimal size increase, but as it is, the XF10 is still the best walkaround very high quality snapshot camera for me. The Ricoh GR might've been a contender but for the dust issues; I carry my XF10 in my pants pockets unprotected and it's been dust-free.

I bought that camera upon release. AF was about what you would expect for that era. At that time it was slighted for a soft lens. I thought the lens was fine, although I'd not pay prices these cameras are getting today.

Yes, I checked prices on eBay just to see what people were asking for these, and was surprised the prices were so high.

The camera only cost about $499 when new, and eBay prices are quite a bit higher than that now.  I'm not sure why.

Exactly. That's about what I paid.

I think the prices for the X100V (brought by social media) are creating demand for other fixed lens cameras in the lineup.

I sincerely hope this camera works for you. It's the only Fuji camera I have ever had serious problems with, and the problems went way beyond autofocus. Went through two copies, both so buggy that they were almost unusable. Would consider a sequel that fixes everything, but I don't think that camera will ever happen.

Set your expectations and it's an awesome camera. I had no issues with the AF,  but i knew not to try fast action with it. Very sharp, but rendering is not quite as nice as other fuji lenses.

Mine went for an unintentional swim in the ocean and is sadly no longer with us.

I have mine with me all the time and love the quality of the output. I bought a spare two years ago when they were discontinued which is still in its sealed box and never been used as the one I use has never let me down. I’ve actually been thinking about selling my spare recently and could likely get more than I paid for it if I do as demand is quite high as it’s become quite sought after. Set up not using the factory settings it’s a cracker!

I enjoy my copy. I have referred to it as one of my "bad weather" and that is not meant to be a putdown. I simply have too many fixed-lens cameras. The small Canon G9X II is my second crappy weather shooter.

Other than focusing a bit slow it is perfect for my type of shooting. No moving kids or pets in my shooting days. I used to have a few sample shots in my gallery but now I am down to a single XF10 photo. I'll post it below (again) as I always liked the rendering.

Enjoy your new camera!

I bought my first copy a year ago. It is the camera which my hands like to hold. IQ is excellent from a Bayer sensor camera. AF is acceptable not so bad compared to my X100F. I shoot mainly on single point smaller square .never get af problem with that .

I forgot to bring the camera with me when I was in short vacation to my country Egypt. I felt i leaved so thing important because i used to go out daily with that camera !!

then i found a new one on my local store in uae .no hesitate i grabbed it .

XF10 is my favorite fujifilm camera.

Re: Fuji XF10

Thanks everyone for all the comments.  The camera is supposed to be here Friday, and I'm sure I'll have all kinds of questions once I get a look at it.

I don't know how much I'll actually use the camera, because as I said, I bought it mostly out of curiosity, but I've always liked Fuji, and this little camera seems like it could be a lot of fun.

I'll try not to make a pain of myself, with dumb questions, once the camera arrives.

I guarantee once you get it a sort it you will use it a lot. This is how I set mine up:

Don't leave it on the factory settings. I mainly use P mode and sometimes A or S. In P mode I have AF set to Single and smallest single point, min shutter speed 1/100, max iso 6400 and high performance mode always on. With such a fantastic lens and sensor, large crops are easy. I love Velvia and Classic Chrome. Here is a typical shot of mine:

Thank you. It sounds like you've given me some good advice.

To be honest, my favorite prime lens cameras are the Sony RX1 series and I bought the RX1 when it was fairly new, but I've also owned both the Fuji X100S and X100F cameras, over the years.

I ended up selling both Fuji cameras in favor of keeping the Sony, but I thought the X100 cameras were very good, and don't ever remember saying a negative word about them.

Anyway, long story short, I'm like you and prefer to use a camera on single point autofocus. I've always found it to be the most reliable, for me.

I know multipoint autofocus or eye/face detection works very well for some people, but everyone is different, and I prefer the “old school” single point.

I also, hardly ever use the manual setting, and opt for one of the semi-auto, shutter, aperture, or Program modes.

When I owned the Fuji cameras, I primarily used the Provia setting while shooting JPEG and probably need to be more forward-thinking and use Velvia or one of the other film modes with the XF10.

It is just a 4 years old camera! I agree that besides the AF it is a nice camera. Fuji tried to compete with the Ricoh GR. But the AF is much much worse than on even older cameras. I tried it alongside a A6300 and a Panasonic LX10. Even the Panasonic was remarkably better.

But the pictures of the Fuji are great and if someone finds a way to use snap or manual focus in certain situations, it is a good camera. Esp. since it has become way cheaper. At the introduction it was similar in price to a GR. I was so pi**ed off by the AF that it became the first camera I brought back to the shop after 90% non keepers that were all in focus according to the LCD.

I read that there was a firmware update, 1.11, that addressed the focus issue. I have no idea if this improved things.

It addressed a focus issue… but doesn’t look like it would have fixed AF speed. I have v1.12 (from new) and certainly the AF isn’t great. I would say marginally better than the X70, on a par with the GR (and I assume also the GR II), and a long way behind the GR III.

Camera arrived a day early

The XF10 arrived a little over an hour ago, and it seems to be built better than I expected.
It's dark and rainy outside, so I took a few quick snapshots indoors with normal room lights turned on.  I need to read the manual and make a couple of adjustments, but, although it did misfocus on one shot, (that might have been my fault) the other pictures turned out okay.

I’m sure you can see the quality already but trust me, ignore the factory settings and set it up like I suggested, also try Velvia, classic chrome etc and all the p a s m options. Enjoy.
