AF-S !AF error XS10

What lens are you using ? 
That should help establish what the problem is ..

Is it possible you have somehow switched on the focus limiter?

Check in-camera focus limiter settings and if the lens you are using has it, check it isn’t limiting and excluding closer distances.

To let you know, I have no problems shooting at min focal range using the 18-55 ... AF range limiter is set to OFF.  I would suggest a full reset to default then doing another test ...

The focus limiter option is on page 3 of the AF menu - for future reference that was very likely your problem and worth checking before doing a full reset.

You're focusing using a tiny focusing box on a dark subject with no contrast, so no, your camera won't focus, no camera that relies on contrast will focus on a subject where there is none. The problem is your inability to understand how to focus that scene, it's not a camera issue.

The xs10 uses hybrid af so should easily af on that scene .

Sure enough after reading the rest of the replies it was a camera setting .
