I just want to be able to turn on the sound when in e-shutter burst mode. I think some of the newer R cameras can do that.

Also would like for the frame rate to be selectable in e-shutter mode - 20/10/5 fps would be perfect.

Since I shoot sports any kind of focus improvement would be welcome.

I expect you will get both the sound and the 20/10/5.....

You are much more of an optimist than I am. I predict we get NOTHING! If there are no further firmware upgrades for an R5 I wouldn't be surprised.

My guess is Canon is doing a new sensor for the R5 II and it is not ready. I don't think Canon had any plans for a 2023 release of the R5Ii. The release of the R6 II made people think an R5II was coming soon. I think the next R5 will be announced about this time next year. I also think competition and market challenges is forcing Canon to finally do a big R5 firmware update. The R5 has the memory and processing power to support additional features. I personally would like to seem more options for ES beyond the 1 image and 20.

The only body ever receiving a decent midlife kicker was the 7DII.

Maybe the parallel is indeed that Canon has other market segments to fill first and existing users can be kept satisfied for a while.

I will be very glad to use my R5 as long as the 7DII.

I am really looking forward to...

... the screen to flip in 2 directions, like a Sony A7 R5. Sony can do that on their R5, why can't Canon??? Should be an easy firmware fix.

How so? The IBIS already is locked if lens IS is turned off. So what would be so difficult about keeping it locked if some firmware switch were enabled instead? Six of one, half a dozen of the other, it seems to me. What am I missing?

If the IS is on does the IBIS have to run?

Obviously not, since it doesn't have to run on my 5DS.

This is a question regarding the R5.

So, for the R5, if the IS is on does the IBIS have to run?

Yes, the way the firmware is written - so update the firmware.

Do you know how the firmware is written? And, if I may, you are absolutely certain of this?

Your 5Ds and my old 5DS I've found IBIS not very beneficial but fantastic battery life.

My R5 disappointingly runs out of battery just sitting on the shelf with the switch turned off. They should fix that, too.

Interestingly batteries discharge on a shelf as well but hopefully one day that will be fixed.

Out cameras are almost used daily and I've never measured it's Q current. Keep it cool and low humidity may help (may not becuase if the Q current is high then it won't be relavant).

You could maybe remove it and make it totally portable 🙈

The batteries last WAY longer in my unused 5DS than in my unused R5. Like a couple orders of magnitude longer. What in the world is the R5 doing when not in use that uses so much battery?

I have two 5DSs and one R5. I sometimes go for a period of several days using only one or the other. That's when the battery runs down while the camera is off.

Because in R5 there is a lot of functions that can stay enabled even with switch set to OFF (it's a soft switch). Bluetooth and wireless is just an example. Can be disabled.

In DSLR the battery is used to power mechanics and electronics mostly during taking a shot. In Mirrorless its much more systems that work continuously.
Accept that ML take much more power or stay with DSLR. Your choice. Not much to change in firmware.

Hmm - I'll look into disabling those. I got my work phone (used for iOS development) which doesn't even have a SIM card to last much longer by putting it in airplane mode. It turned out most of the battery was used in trying to acquire a signal.

When I'm not using my camera, the only function I need to work is the clock, which should use no more power than a watch uses. It should last for weeks.

Re: New R5 firmware in the works?

I keep my R5 in airplane mode, except when I am actively using its wireless features (which I do, for example, when using my phone as a trigger while having it on a stand doing preservation photography, so I can just manipulate the object and save the time of getting up).

I know it's possible to use your phone as a GPS, too, or a dedicated accessory. Some people may use that. For me, it's never been a concern and I'd rather not spend the battery on that.

R5 batteries usually last me a good long time, though I also have the grip, which I use more for its physical attributes with the battery life coming as a bonus.

Getting the life I got out of the 7D2 would be great, but honestly, I bet the next few years will see significantly more advancement, so that might be tough.

Which update are you referring to on the 7D2, I don't remember any significant updates other than the WiFi card compatibility?

I just turned on airplane mode. I hadn't seen it before because the options on that menu didn't interest me. I'd have been happier if it was airplane mode on by default. I guess I should check all menus whether or not I'm interested.

Also, it's counterintuitive that the camera uses those radios when the switch is turned off.

I am trying to understand if what you have said is known to be correct or it's something else.

I am also trying to understand if we can ask you other software/system questions relating to the R5.

So for that yes.

Your 5Ds and my old 5DS I've found IBIS not very beneficial but fantastic battery life.

I was hoping you would be able to tell us 🤗

Do you have any data on how long a single full battery will last in your R5 without use? I would guess I've gone 7 days on a rare occasion.

Do you have airplane mode on?

Out cameras are almost used daily and I've never measured it's Q current. Keep it cool and low humidity may help (may not becuase if the Q current is high then it won't be relavant).

I do now. I did not until today. Until now I was working on the maybe erroneous assumption that with the camera turned off, this setting was irrelevant. I can't think of any use to use any radio when the camera is turned off. Turning the camera off should turn off the radios. An exception would be a GPS, which may need time to acquire satellites, but the R5 has no GPS.

Like many devices it's similar to a standby. In this case the camera allows the WiFi connection to stay connected when off. To do this it must keep the BT radio on.

See page 597 of the advanced user manual.

I would suggest this is a majority of the power usage when off but not all.

I can't think of any use to use any radio when the camera is turned off. Turning the camera off should turn off the radios. An exception would be a GPS, which may need time to acquire satellites, but the R5 has no GPS.

Canon is planning a dealer meeting to announce new R5 firmware

Latest rumor is that Canon is planning dealer meetings about the new R5 firmware.  First time Canon has held dealer meetings for a firmware update in many years.
