The only thing replacing a G7 X is a G7 X with a higher number.

I doubt that we will ever see that.

Well, the G7 X line at least is in production

In all honesty, this can't possibly be a surprise for anyone who knows how Canon operates. Yes, the M system will be more of a niche product in future, but as they say, R just can't get that small, and for the Asian market, that's really important.
Anyway, looks like EF-M will continue after DPR is dead and gone.

I kind of hope so :/

Along with the M6 II that was discontinued last summer, the M200 is now on the official Canon list of discontinued products

https://cweb.canon.jp/eos/lineup/old-products/

The M50 II (Kiss M2) is currently the only M model that is not discontinued. For comparison, the SL3 (Kiss X10), T7 (Kiss X90), T8i (Kiss X10i) and 90D DSLRs which share much of their parts with the discontinued M models are all still available.

In broader numbers this is what is listed as current for each mount from Canon Japan:

  • EF/EF-S DSLR - 7 models
  • EF-M - 1 model
  • RF - 10 models

You can read whatever you want into the statements from Canon executives, but the numbers above paint a very clear picture.

The M50II is good enough to survive this forum.

These are some funny dark camera jokes.

I don't have my hopes up, but just bought M6 II out of spite, contemplating on building lens selection around it.

I too have just added a M6 MKII to my stable that already included a M50 MKII and a selection of Canon & Sigma EF-M, EF-S, and EF lenses. I think the M system is a great system…

The thing about Canon statements is that they should always be read at face value, without trying to read anything else in - especially if you're not au fait with Canon's corporate culture, which is somewhat different from its competitors. But they always say exactly what they intend to say, no more, no less.
They've never, ever said that M is dead. They've got it pretty much where they want it - a low-end ILC, or effectively a high end compact. They know most M buyers (and remember, none of us have ever been most M buyers) have never been looking for a full suite of lenses, but for something that will do more than a phone but still be remarkably small. And most of that market is in Asia. They will continue to supply that market whilst it remains economically sensible, and possibly, given the impact the switch from FD had on Canon's corporate culture, a little longer, if they believe there are still EF-M owners looking for another body. These owners - again, they're not us - are vanishingly unlikely to ever be in the market to move to RF.
I've come to love the M system. I love the M6 II, the M200, the M50 - great little cameras. I obviously don't think there will be an M6 II replacement. Do I think there will be an M300, or an M50 III? Probably not. But I do think the M50 II will be there for some time yet. But who knows? Canon, and as usual, they're not telling more than they want to. (Or perhaps they don't know, which would make it even more sensible not to say too much now!) Whatever, it's a mug's game to try to read into Canon statements anything that's not explicitly there.

The translated statement of...

"Thus, compactness and lightness are therefore two common points between the APS-C models of the EOS R range and those of the EOS M series."

Means nothing to me because that rationale did not prevent other camera manufacturers from discontinuing products that are more compact (e.g., Pentax Q).

I expect manufacturing of all Canon M cameras to be discontinued in the near future. Of course I do not know when this will happen, and the decision will be based on costs versus profit. I will speculate that it could occur later this year or sometime next year. If not, I will be happy to be wrong.

I am in the camp of keeping my three Canon M cameras (M5, M6 Mark II and M50 Mark II) and six (6) M lenses until the camera bodies die and I can no longer purchase a used one. I purchased the M6mII and M50mII used, so I feel that I have not spent money foolishly. Because I enjoy using the M system, the longer I use it the more personal value it will bring to me.

I am not too concerned about wearing out my M cameras because I have two other digital cameras and two film cameras that I use regularly. If one of these camera bodies unexpectedly malfunctions due to an accident or unexplained reason, I have the other two to keep using.

Whatever happens in the future, no regrets.
