Davinci Resolve 18 opens up 80GB ram

I have this project that was to take "20 days" on my MSI Creator laptop Core i7-10875H (8/16) , 32GB , 2080Super, 8GB.

Well, as far as I got was 1 minute out of 20 minutes in 24 hours before I cancelled it in DR18.   DR18 was acting strange - I think wasting time trying to get video memory to use.THe time to complete was always, and the DR18 screen was always glitching. Other times it would crash. Running CPU encoding eliminated the flashing, but was no faster.

So my new laptop, i9-13980hx (8/16+16) with 128GB, 4090 w/ 16GB ram, on the same project - gets through 1 minute of this video in 3.x hours. No more glitching. Although it does dip into main memory and grabs 80GB for GPU ram. (I really wasn't expecting this, but explains why my 32GB laptop struggled).

I wasn't sure if it would crash or stop.. it finally did stop

Half way through rendering.. showing 7 days left?.. which was still high. I believe I started Thursday night 6:30pm, and finished Sunday afternoon 4:00pm.

Most of the problem started when I started doing crazy stuff after watching youtuber Hugh Hou/CreatorUp, like adding TEXT overlays to my 360 video, and adjusting the YAW, and also throw in doubling the frame rate to 60fps.

GoPro player cannot adjust the yaw at all unfortunately... (GoPro Fusion software could).

I'm using cineform for this project. I might try the filmscan 1 or 2 options next.

Why am I posting? Not sure. I was just surprised by the memory request by DR 18 to 64GB  to total 80GB.  It definitely isn't needing all of it.

I do have one issue I'll need to figure out.

I'm not sure if Windows 11 comes with codec for HEVC. I know I had to install it on Windows 10.

The 360 video played back in the default windows player drops way too many frames. I have to play it on the older machine.

So it is surprising that it plays at all without the codec. (Could have new code to not need the codec?).

I'll test out some other clips and start googling if it needs the codec.

Thanks! How is the accuracy of the monitor? I have an ASUS gaming laptop at the moment and it's great, but I can't rely on the monitor for colour accuracy. I have a 2nd which is much better, but it's not reliable in the field in that regard.

Not sure actually yet.  Haven't really compared to my Creator MSI 17" mini led.

Although not exactly color related - I was watching some HDR on youtube - and had to dial down the brightness to 40% as it was blowing out the most of the highlights in the video..

It's mini led - so I kind of expect it to be close enough to the other mini led.

RESOLVE is a GPU fiend. It's totally designed around using GPU as much as possible.

If you want to do anything complex in real time then you need MULTIPLE GPUs.  Certainly you can't expect to do much with a LAPTOP single GPU even if it's on the heavier side.

RAM is kind of irrelevant.

Most high end finishing post facilities use multiple GPUs and even then you still can get slow down once yo start adding. a lot of complexity like NR and layers.

go to the windows app store and search for both hevc and hdr support options.

win11 has expanded hdr support, and while it's much better there is much left to do.

The 360 video played back in the default windows player drops way too many frames. I have to play it on the older machine.

i can't tell what your source footage is, but you are exporting in h.265, and if 4:2:2 is in that h.265 workflow you should know that nvidia/amd video cards don't provide hardware acceleration for it.

the integrated intel gpu however does support it, and in the screen shots you posted it's not being utilized that much, so i'd look to see how it's configured both within win11 and in the resolve software.

your use of cineform indicates that you re-encoded some source footage?

given that it's a laptop, there could be thermal throttling involved, you should be able to monitor for that with the right software.
