XT-4: LCD black with flash mounted

OK, I'm sure there's a simple solution that I cannot locate in the manual, so hopefully someone can chime in. I need to take a passport photo using my shoe-mounted flash (bounced off white ceiling). I have the aperture set to f/5.6 and shutter speed manually set to 1/125. The room is dim and this is causing the LCD on back of the X-T4 to be completely black (viewfinder, too). If I press the shutter button half way, the image appears for about half a second, then disappears and the focus lock warning appears that the camera is unable to focus. So, I cannot compose, nor can the camera focus.

If I set the shutter dial to 'A' the image appears on the LCD but the shutter speed is set to 1.6 seconds.

I don't want to turn up the room lights because that will cause hot spots on the photos.

What am I missing here?

That's a frequently asked question here.
