Canon T8i / 850D viewfinder ISO display

I just noticed something but I don't know if it means anything specific, if there's a minor malfunction or if it's always been that way and I'm just now noticing (never say never).

When the ISO is set at 200 or above it's normal, but if it's below 200 there's an underscore in the first decimal location. See the comparison image:

Also, if I set it to Auto ISO, it shows the "A" as expected, but the bottom segment is mostly (but not completely) illuminated, so it looks more like an "8" instead of an "A". Maybe the LED has partially failed?

I've powered the camera off / on but it persists. I've found nothing in the user manual that's relevant, unless I overlooked it. There's no operational issue that I've noticed (yet, at least).

It could be a firmware glitch. I'd have to check but I think I'm out of warranty on the camera. I bought it in November 2020, IIRC.

Then again, the T8i is definitely a step child as far as Canon is concerned, being their final consumer DSLR. As of a few days ago there were no firmware downloads even listed on the website. They offer no accessories designed just for it, etc. End of the road for entry level DSLRs.

But as long as it works, it doesn't matter.

I just checked mine. If I set the ISO to 100, there is no underscrore after the 100. I checked 125, and the same result. No underscrore.

If I set the ISO to Auto, the viewfinder does not say "Auto" in the viewfinder.. It just gives me the number.

I can't tell why our are different.

I've not done any test shots, etc., but I see no indication of operational issues so it's really just a minor curiosity at this point.

Just a wild speculative guess but do you have highlight tone priority switched on?

No, I checked that and it's off.

I can’t think of anything else other than maybe check what firmware you have and if it’s the latest version.

There's no later version and I really don't expect any updates, given that the T8i is basically a step-child camera at this point. There are no more Canon consumer DSLRs, it was the last one.
