R3 price drop on Canon website?

Couldn’t help but notice the $500 price drop on the R3 on the Canon website.

R1 to be announced soon, perhaps?

Not likely. They like to release “flagship” cameras in Olympic years, so 2024.

I got a $170 CAD discount on the Canon.ca site for the R6 MK2. I think just periodic discounts.

I also see the R3 has dropped $400 CAD on the Canon Canada site as well.

Re: R3 price drop on Canon website?

It dropped last month around the time most Presidents Day sales were going on. I bought mine in the beginning of January and wished I waited but needed it for a trip before then.

Inventory

Seems like a normal sale to mitigate the inventory levels they have. However, it very well may be the first precursor to setting up for the R1. The idea is to clear as much inventory as you can, before you preannounce the R1. The R1 is expected to have a development announcement sometime this year for a 2024 release. Same with the R5, they cut the price there too, and I imagine that was for clearing inventory for the announcement of the Mark II as well as to offer a cheaper alternative to buying a A7R5.

Re: B&H Photo Canon R's price drop

Canon wrote that their goal is to sell 2.9 million interchangeable lens cameras this year. I suppose it will take occasional discounts to do that.

Re: R3 price drop on Canon website?

It's certainly possible that the recent $500 price drop on the Canon R3 camera could be an indication that the highly anticipated Canon R1 is about to be announced.

Canon has not made any official statements regarding the release date or specs of the R1 camera, but there have been rumors circulating for years that it is in development and could be announced sometime in 2023/24.

However, it's important to note that the price drop on the R3 could also simply be a marketing strategy to make the camera more accessible to a wider range of customers. It's not uncommon for camera manufacturers to adjust their pricing in response to market demand and competition.

Ultimately, it's difficult to say for certain what the price drop on the R3 means for the release of the R1 camera. We will have to wait for an official announcement from Canon to know for sure.

Same story in France CANON R3 at 6.399 euros. Prices in Europe higher than US even with their debt-laden currency. Example Fuji X-T5 Made in China at 2.000 euros; not worth it.

R3 has been wildly overpriced...

The Z9 and A1 perform as well, have much higher resolution, and are cheaper. In the used market they are about $4500 now, and there really is no reason the R3 should cost more. In theory it should cost less imo. So a price adjustment makes sense and is only reflective of current market conditions. I think the R5II comes out before the R1. For some reason Canon is struggling with the 1, maybe they are trying to get a global shutter in there which has not been done before.

Something interesting, the first official Canon acknowledgement of the R1 has been made. So its very likely a development announcement is in the works.
