Source tells Jan Wegener "No R5ii in 2023"

One of Jan Wegener's Canon sources who has been reliable in the past has just told him that there will be no R5ii this year, nor an R1.

Check out the first minute of his new video:

What do you think, is this reliable?

Well, like most people I am in no position to say whether it is reliable, but it is certainly plausible. Canon seems to like to make big splashes in Olympic years, so that would mean 2024. What Canon should be working on flat out right now is the design and production of lenses I don’t know I want yet.

Interesting. Personally I'm still fine with the R5 as my birding/wildlife body. I don't need the extra AF customizations for what and how I shoot.

The R6ii does fit the bill when I do need more selectivity (for events, sports, etc).

I feel I can wait if necessary.

ps. Just watched the beginning of the video.  Those fast Telezooms look amazing, but they are going to be $$$$$$$$$$.

That’s exactly what I expected so no disappointment here.

Yes that all makes sense.  I could see the R6 getting updated more quickly since it was using a presumably older sensor tech (than the R5) and had that multi-line readout that can cause weird artifacts.  To me (based on using the R5 & R6) the R6 was much more in need of an update than the R5.

Like others say, I don't know about the reliability of Jan's source.

But the R5II rumors - coming straight after the R6II was released - always sounded like wishful thinking from someone being envious on the fast update of the R6 line.

I have no guess for R5II, but the R1 I expect to follow Canon's usual release-frequency for top-models, meaning years of Summer Olympics (R1 in 2024).

Maybe they could give the current R5 a firmware update in the meantime…please?

Canon couldeasily do that and include all the recent software improvements like resizable AF zones and tracking in all AF modes. But they almost certainly won't

Did anyone with a sound mind actually expect an R5II or R1 this year, aside from rumor sites/videos that demand constant traffic to stay afloat?

The R1 is certainly going to be an Olympic venue camera, so that was pretty obvious not this year. And the R5II would land too close to the R6II, plus the cycle time would be decreasing.

The most likely reason we only got an R6II this early was because canon wants to, or already did stop production of the 1DXIII sensors it used.

Hopefully this means alot of lenses instead, both high end but more ideally some midrange options.

Good. No money available either in 2023.

So, someone outdid CR

Mind you the CR source was a CR2.  If the Jan rumour turns out to be true.

I didn't think they would release one so soon.  It's not like the R6 that was using an old sensor from the start, the R5 was released with a brand new sensor.

HI Justme,

Yes, that's what interested me, the fact that the big rumour was a CR2 rumour. It will be interesting to see which one turns out to be correct.

Canon Rumors has also expressed increase skepticism towards the rumor later, because they didn't get any confirmations or related rumors from other known sources afterwards.

But in general... I have been following Canon Rumors in many years. and while a CR2 rating of course means a higher change than CR1, most CR2 rumors doesn't turn out to be true.

Re: So, someone outdid CR

I thing the only [CR2] rated rumor was that R5II will arrive before R1. This still can mean 2024, which would match usual 5-series bodies release cycle.

Although everyone's input is just speculation, this seems like a reasonable direction for Canon.   The 5D series had closer to a 4 year replacement cycle and with a declining market, soaring costs, supply chain issues and the ability to update bodies via firmware, I wouldn't expect Canon to accelerate replacements unless there was a major gap or perceived flaw with their current offering that would have substantial market impact.

I think people are thinking about this rumor from November:

Same here.

But I didn't expect the R6mkII coming so soon, and I also didn't expect the R8.

This actually makes sense to me.

The R6 Mark II had some "guts" (i.e. hardware/software, focusing improvements, etc.) from the R3 improvements.

If this is true, I suspect Canon will release the R1 before the R5 Mark II...(similar to how they released the R3 and R6 Mark II). if that happens, I have no doubt the R5 Mark II will have some "guts" from the R1. (Which, the R1 will undoubtedly have the same, if not improved "guts" from the R3).

In the meantime, in makes sense to release lenses that many will use for the upcoming Olympics (i.e. effective telephoto lenses).

Until then...I am completely happy with my R5! (and I'm suspecting I will continue to be happy with even after the R5 Mark II release, as I suspect the R5 Mark II will be expensive)!.
