Thinking of adding a 7D to my "vintage" camera collection

I am pretty much set up with my modern cameras, but I also love old gear, like my Canon 5D, Leica M8 and M9P which still are capable of producing beautiful images and I enjoy using them very much.

Years ago another favorite of mine was the Epson R-D1 (I had 2 years ago) the files from that 6mp sensor look beautiful, but I wouldnt pay 2 grand for one these days.

I was thinking in the Nikon D80 (also CCD) but I never had a Minolta in the past, so it would be nice to try something different. I wonder if the 7D plus the 24mm f2.8 mark II would be a nice set kit to have fun from time to time and get me some of that special CCD "flavor" that I like.

Thanks for your comments!

It would - unless it fails prematurely. And that has happened with rather disturbing frequency. I'd be a little hesitant to get another one after mine failed.

Oh, and if you're talking about Minolta lenses, 'mark II' is not a thing. The second generation A-mount Minoltas are called RS or restyled.

That is exactly what Maoby also told me, what a shame. I would have to risk 250 bucks for the body plus whatever the cost of the lens might be to see if it fails in the near future. I don't think there are parts available anymore.

I was also thinking of the Nikon D80, but there are many on eBay all "for parts" or with "error" so I guess those are prone to fail too!

There are several places, where we talk about the problems of the Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D

Both the price and the reliability is why I haven't grabbed a 7D yet.

As far as the D80, I went instead with the D60. Just a little "less" camera but much more reliable in my opinion as well as some others from the DX forum.

Since I've only owned the one 7D and it worked when I bought it and works now, I don't have good visibility into their failure rate or whether ones that were repaired or made later have better reliability.

I would say to buy from a seller than allows returns so you can test it for a couple of days to make sure FFB doesn't show up. Not sure whether the eBay SquareTrade warranty would be available, but, if so, that might be a good idea, too.

I bought mine from a seller in Japan about three years ago. No problems so far.

Other interesting, and relatively inexpensive, vintage cameras are the 1D (CCD), 1Ds, and the Nikon D1x (CCD), and, Nikon D200 (CCD).

I would also say that, if you're interested by film photography, you might want to get both a 7D and a Maxxum 7. They are very similar in control layout and features, and the Maxxum 7 is one of the most advanced film cameras ever. Really nice to shoot with, and will work great with all the same (non-DT) lenses as the 7D. If, one the other hand, you just want the 7D, you might consider the Sony 16-50/2.8 zoom instead of the 24/2.8 prime. The 16-50 is quite a nice lens and can be had quite reasonably these days from places like MPB.
