There's absolutely no difference in IQ for fuji sensors for a decade. My XE-1, XT-2 and XH-2 gives the same image quality when pixel peeping. The only improvement is dynamic range. So dont worry so much.

Watch the histogram as you turn the EV dial, all will be revealed...

There are lots of bad examples, and good examples with bad processing out there. A 40MP sensor is going to be more reliant on good lenses, and shooting/post processing technique for an optimal result, but will never be softer than a 26MP sensor with the same lenses. A lot of people are processing with the same sharpening/NR settings as with their old sensors which can significantly limit the rendering fine detail. While diffraction can be resolution limiting factor, it will never produce a worse result than with 26MP, it will only limit how much better it can be.

Exactly correct.

Another way to understand diffraction is if you had a perfectly sharp lens (with no aberrations) and an infinitely dense sensor then the only limiting factor would be diffraction which would only further decrease sharpness upon stopping down (the perfectly round aperture). In other words, diffraction exists no matter the aperture (because the aperture is the only source of the diffraction in an otherwise perfect lens).

That's why a really good relatively fast crop sensor prime lens can peak overall at f/4 or even wider and show diffraction sharpness loss already by f/5.6. A more typical crop lens often peaks at f/5.6 simply because it just isn't quite as sharp at f/4.

It is +  In RAW it is easy  to get highlights id they are a bit to brilliant but on the contrary in underexposed photo pushing shadows create noise.

Re: Fuji X-H2 resolution?

I'm sorry the image can be good enough for the intended use but for me the per pixel sharpness is just not there. The lens can be an issue, or the X-trans smearing or the processing starting from the RAW file (in camera or not). A good test would be if you shoot an image in both the large (40 MP) and the medium format (20 MP) and upres the 20 MP image to the same size as the 40 MP image and compare them. Or else downres the 40 MP image to 20 MP and compare those. Kr, P.

Re: Fuji X-H2 resolution?

New sensor technology making a difference but trade-offs. EXAMPLE: CANON R3 with 24mp stacked sensor advantages for sports photographers; not as sharp as CANON R5 with 45mp sensor in some situations. FUJI APS-C cameras with 40mp sensor but not on Fuji XH-2S proves something. Such minor image quality changes just to increase prices.

Oh, I didn't know that turning the EV dial has an influence on the histogram And you do not answer my question, do you?

Thx Bob, I saw the same initial comment in another thread, and there you had added the +

Apologies, yes, it does. So let me be more specific:

- set your camera to automatic.

- Make sure the display (LCD) is set to show the histogram.

- Point camera at a scene and turn the EV dial

- The histogram will shift according to the direction you turn the dial

+ moves it to the right...

- moves it to the left...

Guys, I perfectly well know what ETTR is, since many years, and how to set the camera to show it, including the RGB histogram, or not. And I hardly ever use the cameras in automatic, but in A priority and manual ISO. So no need to use the EC dial. But I was not sure about the term "ETTR 2/3 to 1 EV". As I answered Bob, I now know that it means 2/3 to 1 EV overexposure. I am all good.

BobsYourUncle wrote:

Ya win some, ya lose some! 😁

Just to clarify Bob, I did already have the A7IV and A1 when I dropped by the Fuji store in London. I had the A7IV with me and the new 20-70 but was curious to see the X-H2/X-T5, as I could still have been persuaded at that point, to have a different second body to the A1.

After reviewing the A7IV image files I am indeed very happy with A7IV image quality and although I'm not sold on the 20-70 f4 I don't consider the Fuji aps-c as a viable option for me anymore.

Thanks again for everyone's input.

Ok, before this blows up - it was meant to be a little joke...along the lines of "he didn't pick our team, so (insert insult here)".

Now I realize that type of "poke" may not translate.  No harm intended.
